Indeed, the popularity of this genre has led to the creation of a new name for them.  Similar titles are now known as Soulslike and have several consistent elements.  These include incredibly difficult gameplay, a mysterious story that players discover for themselves, along with slow and careful gameplay.  Mortal Shell is the latest example of this trend. <\/p>\n<p>Developer Cold Symmetry hasn&#8217;t even tried to hide the fact that Mortal Shell is heavily inspired by Dark Souls.  But that means the title has a lot to live up to.  You cannot make such remarks without inviting comparisons from critics and players.  Fortunately, Mortal Shell is more right than wrong.  But that doesn&#8217;t mean it&#8217;s quite up to FromSoftware&#8217;s game standards.<\/p><div id=\"forum-3061294967\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Mortal-Shell-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32233\"  ><\/figure>\n<p>What players will immediately discover when playing Mortal Shell is that there isn&#8217;t much of a story.  At least, there is no story in the traditional sense.  You simply step out of what looks like a swamp and emerge into the world.  From the opening moments, you won&#8217;t have a real idea of \u200b\u200bwho you are and what your purpose is.  Instead, Mortal Shell throws you into the action immediately and wastes no time explaining these kinds of details.  The few clues that are revealed come from NPC observations or item descriptions.<\/p>\n<p>The general idea, however, is that you are a ghost being known as a foundling.  To interact with the word, this foundling must possess the bodies of fallen warriors.  These corpses become the shells of your spirit, allowing you to advance.  But the narrative isn&#8217;t going anywhere exciting.  The tradition is largely left unexplored with just a few curiosities to discover.  While Dark Souls and other Soulslike games take a similar approach, Mortal Shell goes a little too far.  There simply isn&#8217;t enough in the story to keep you interested in the plot.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1975600013\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649380338_626_Mortal-Shell-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32210\"  ><\/figure>\n<p>However, that&#8217;s not the story Mortal Shells is trying to impress with.  Rather it is the gameplay that takes center stage.  If you&#8217;ve ever played a Dark Souls game, the gameplay of this title will feel awfully familiar.  You have only two forms of attack, heavy and light offensive moves.  These can be put together to create rudimentary combos.  However, the focus is never on how you can attack your enemies, but rather on how to avoid damage.  Unlike Dark Souls, you don&#8217;t do this by dodging or blocking.  Instead, you can harden at any time, becoming invulnerable to all damage.  It is a nice mechanic and it works well.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the main combat, Mortal Shell has some unique features.  The main one is the distinctive class system.  Players can find a total of four different bullets to use throughout the game.  Each shell has unique characteristics that change the amount of health, stamina, and resolution available.  These are traits that cannot be upgraded like others using harvested tar.  This actually forces you to choose a shell that suits your play style.  The only downside is that you have to find the shells before moving on to them, which means that any updates you have made are lost.  It prevents you from changing gears, even if the shell is better suited to your style of play. <\/p><div id=\"forum-1422030094\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, boss fights work fantastic.  Despite the fact that there are only a few scattered throughout the campaign, each one is a joy to overcome.  You should find a lot of fun taking on these tough enemies.  However, none of them are impossible to beat as long as you take your time.  The same can be said of weapons, which offer a great variety even though there are only four varieties.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Mortal-Shell-Review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32211\"  ><\/figure>\n<p>In terms of presentation, Mortal Shell brings out its aesthetics quite well.  While not great, it does exactly what it means in a relatively great way.  Considering how small the download is, at just a few gigabytes, it has amazing quality.  It obviously doesn&#8217;t quite match what AAA titles can achieve, but it still looks great.  The art style that the developers chose fits perfectly with the action, giving off an otherworldly feeling.  It works well when combined with the mystery narrative.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the sound design is also quite good.  Mortal Shell is definitely worth playing with a decent sound system or headphones.  This is because otherwise you will lose a lot of audio detail.  The game constantly makes the world seem like a living environment.  The wind blows through the trees and you can hear creaks echoing in the distance.  Sound can also help with the game, giving you an indication of where enemies are hiding in the dark.  <\/p>\n<p>There are some glitches and visual glitches in Mortal Shell, but nothing that ruins the overall experience.  For the most part, it remains stable with very few bugs or stutters.  This is a big plus because this type of game is known to have these kinds of problems.  Mortal Shell manages to effectively avoid them during the entire 10 hours or so of the campaign.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649380339_103_Mortal-Shell-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32212\"  ><\/figure>\n<p>Mortal Shell definitely has its flaws.  It&#8217;s lacking in polish in some areas and doesn&#8217;t have all the features you&#8217;d expect from a Soulslike experience.  But that&#8217;s to be expected from a title created by a team of 15 people.<\/p>\n<p>What Mortal Shell does well is to separate itself from other games in the genre.  While taking a lot of inspiration from Dark Souls, Mortal Shell contains many distinct elements.  Not only by replicating what happened before, Mortal Shell stands out from the crowd.  Thanks to the slightly easier difficulty, it&#8217;s also a great introduction to the genre for new players.
