Held in New York&#8217;s beautiful Gotham Hall and attended by media people from around the world, the event was the company&#8217;s first in-person meeting since the pandemic and also quite impressive.  The reason for this gathering? But as the events themselves get bigger, the products somehow become less impressive and, in some cases, even disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>The OnePlus 10T is a perfect phone.  We have done a detailed practice and we think most people will be reasonably satisfied.  It&#8217;s a phone that settles for just being your average everyday smartphone, designed to appeal to the average consumer without doing anything crazy or out of the box. There are companies now that are bending glass to make their phones foldable (quite intentionally, if I may add).  Others have found a way to fit large 1.0-inch type sensors and incredible optical zoom mechanisms within the standard smartphone form factor.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, there are brands that offer external coolers to manage heat, complete with thermoelectric elements, activation buttons, and RGB lighting.  Just in the last couple of weeks we&#8217;ve seen a phone that fits the stunning flagship specs in a compact body and another that has a clear glass back with flashing LED lights that signal the caller with distinct patterns.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1741023797\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>You might think some of these are gimmicks, but the point is, it&#8217;s interesting and there&#8217;s an attempt to stand out.  Not all ideas need to be kept, but sometimes you just have to appreciate the effort put in to make it work and dare to be different.  Unfortunately, we don&#8217;t see any of this with the OnePlus 10T, nor with any other of the company&#8217;s recent launches.<\/p>\n<p>OnePlus 7 Pro was probably the last time we had an interesting version of OnePlus.  The pop-out camera, while not unique, was certainly a very cool feature, and we&#8217;ve been complaining about the leak ever since.  And while it might not sound that impressive now, it&#8217;s saying how calm things have gotten since that&#8217;s the thing we&#8217;ve chosen to remember.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_655_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Take: OnePlus 10T and OxygenOS 13\"><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s OnePlus is perfectly happy to release iterative devices that don&#8217;t push the boat too hard.  He is quite happy to be in the middle of the group, almost as if he is trying not to stick out too far.  Not every company has to be the pioneer in every segment, but you can only ride halfway through the pack until people forget you exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"image-row clearfix\">\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Back when OnePlus made interesting collaborations\" width=\"315\" height=\"209\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_281_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\"><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Back when OnePlus made interesting collaborations\" width=\"315\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_627_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\"><br \/>\n<br \/><span><strong>Back when OnePlus made interesting collaborations<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But as if the loss of cool features weren&#8217;t bad enough, the company has also slowly begun to lose the essentials people have come to expect from the brand.<\/p>\n<p>OnePlus&#8217;s alert slider has been a staple of the company since OnePlus 2. Recently, we&#8217;ve seen it disappear from a handful of regional launches, but the OnePlus 10T is the first to go global with this omission.  OnePlus has its reasons and we&#8217;ll pretend we care, but in reality, no reason is big enough to justify losing not only one of your devices&#8217; major strengths, but also what people have come to love and appreciate. of your brand.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" alt=\"Alert slider on OnePlus 2\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_873_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\"><br \/>\n<span><strong>Alert slider on OnePlus 2<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But few things hurt like what has happened to the company&#8217;s OxygenOS software over the years.  What was once the central pillar of the OnePlus experience and one of the most coveted features of their smartphones, OxygenOS has gone through a full comic story arc where it went from being a hero to living long enough to see itself become the villain. .<\/p>\n<p>As any longtime OnePlus fan would prove, the best part about OxygenOS was that it wasn&#8217;t like any of the other Chinese Android skins out there.  OnePlus based its design on the stock Android look, but with some basic design changes introduced for good measure.  The end result was the best of both worlds, a clean and familiar design but with enough extra features and a touch of design to elevate the experience without washing over it.<\/p>\n<p>All of this was ousted once Oppo was involved.  The powers that would have been decided for the merger of the OxygenOS and ColorOS code bases.  But that was a good thing, they said, as OxygenOS 12 would have the design and speed of OxygenOS with the reliability of ColorOS.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_614_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Take: OnePlus 10T and OxygenOS 13\"><\/p>\n<p>As we know now, none of this has come true.  The final product not only looked nothing like what OnePlus users had been used to in the past, it was also comically buggy at launch.  Needless to say, it wasn&#8217;t a great success.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, OnePlus has announced that the next version, OxygenOS 13, will be closer to stock Android, familiar to longtime OnePlus users, and will retain its unique visual design.  This has rekindled people&#8217;s hopes.  Yes, the company basically lied about what the OxygenOS 12 would look like, but they definitely wouldn&#8217;t do it again, right?  Surely, this time they would keep their word.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_117_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Take: OnePlus 10T and OxygenOS 13\"><\/p>\n<p>Turns out, no, they won&#8217;t.  When OnePlus revealed what the OxygenOS 13 would look like at the event, it became obvious that this is once again an even more veiled build than ColorOS.  While we haven&#8217;t seen much of the upcoming ColorOS 13, a look at the leaked images and what OnePlus has revealed about OxygenOS 13 and it becomes obvious that the two are essentially identical, even more so than OxygenOS 12 and ColorOS 12, where OnePlus at least pretended to be. make them look different.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"inline-image\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1341\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/1659982478_608_Hot-Take-OnePlus-10T-and-OxygenOS-13.jpg\" alt=\"Hot Take: OnePlus 10T and OxygenOS 13\"><\/p>\n<p>At this point there is no doubt that OnePlus phones are re-baptized Oppo devices and that the company has no real intention of keeping its distinct identity.  We have known for years that the two companies shared the parts.  Recently, they even stopped pretending their two charging techniques were different and just started shipping Oppo chargers with OnePlus phones.  Then the warning cursors started to disappear and now the software is identical.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not that companies don&#8217;t have sub-brands.  Oppo itself has Realme, which is nothing but Oppo phones renamed for different (and sometimes the same) markets.  But OnePlus started its life as a separate thing, completely different from everything else that was being made at the time.  Being different is how it has established itself in the market and why it has enjoyed a fan following for years.  Now it&#8217;s just a way for Oppo to double or sometimes triple the same market with the same basic hardware and software but different brands.<\/p>\n<p> We wish things had gone differently and perhaps there is still time for OnePlus to correct the course.  But with every new launch and every broken promise we lose hope that this will ever happen.  Maybe the time has finally come for all the fans to move on.
