Originally a 2019 Xbox exclusive, it was recently released on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG.<\/p>\n<p>Made popular by classic franchises like Wizardry and Might &#038; Magic, grid-based dungeon crawlers have slipped out of the limelight in recent years.  Many of the subgenre&#8217;s modern additions simply regurgitate the fundamentals without bringing anything innovative to the table.  If poorly executed, dungeon crawlers can be unbearable.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1709508995\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Operencia: The Stolen Sun is guilty of many of the same criticisms aimed at the subgenre&#8217;s lower offerings.  Combat, locations, and weapons wouldn&#8217;t seem out of place in Dungeon Master.  And the seven playable characters fit perfectly into conventional fantasy roles of knight, thief, archer and sorcerer.  From the very first second of play, Operencia: The Stolen Sun looks familiar.  Still, the game is more than the sum of its parts.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Operencia-The-Stolen-Sun-Review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22485\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Tropes of the subgenre appear faithfully in Operencia: The Stolen Sun. But Hungarian developer Zen Studios adds a touch of personality by adopting their own cultural background as inspiration.  Hungarian folklore is prevalent throughout the narrative.  It offers a refreshing change of pace from the typical topics explored by most Western RPGs.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1157575497\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>This is not to say that Operencia weaves a particularly bizarre story.  In general, the simple story is based on a proven narrative formula.  A farmer is summoned by the gods to embark on a mission in search of a missing MacGuffin.  During his journey, the bespoke protagonist meets six other strangers on the road.  Everyone for one reason or another decides to lend a hand.  As tends to be the case, this adventure involves killing dragons, a couple of vengeful spirits, and lots of fire jokes.<\/p>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<p>There is the occasional footage.  But Operencia: The Stolen Sun tells its story mainly through an omniscient narrator, extraordinary interludes presented as a picture book and static images of the characters chatting about everything and nothing.  The narrator and the interludes do an admirable job promoting a sense of wonder and mystique typically associated with fairy tales.  Unfortunately, static images suffer from inconsistent voice acting. Hence, Zen Studios deserves props for creating detailed and diverse areas congruent with the established world.  Whether it&#8217;s traversing a dark forest or a fairy castle, Operencia&#8217;s 13 maps are nothing short of stunning.  A comparable level of healing has been extended to enemy designs, especially the myriad of exciting bosses.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649452054_385_Operencia-The-Stolen-Sun-Review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22487\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Character creation<\/h2>\n<p>After a short tutorial, players get access to a reasonably robust character creator.  You can choose between a knight, a thief or a magical user.  The seven playable characters earn points for upgrading three distinct skill trees, learning spells and powerful attacks along the way.  You can also earn XP to improve stats and equip better weapons.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the path chosen, a warrior ends up completely differently.  For example, J\u00f3ska can transform into a killer with a penchant for poison or a ranged fighter with access to medium healing spells.  New pieces of armor and weapons are constantly dropping, so party gear tends to be swapped out frequently.  Operencia contains a significant amount of loot.  But few actively affect combat in any noticeable way beyond a trivial stat boost.  So it becomes a matter of choosing the strongest object and moving on.  On the contrary, the potion-making system is a delight.<\/p>\n<h2>Riddles<\/h2>\n<p>Those who are used to first-person dungeon crawlers should feel comfortable with Operencia&#8217;s controls, especially once the more open and consequently less precise introductory area is finished.  The fight is interrupted by underground puzzles.  In general, you can find solutions for these puzzles by reading a recently discovered journal entry or by observing the environment.  Periodically, you can get special items that help complete puzzles and unlock closed passages.  Once the world map is available, you will be able to revisit previously explored dungeons to discover new loot.  Operencia&#8217;s puzzles are the most rewarding part of the adventure.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Operencia-The-Stolen-Sun-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28327\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Fight<\/h2>\n<p>The combat of Operencia is useful.  Unlike the story or the puzzles, Zen Studios seems to settle mostly for a standard, albeit refined, turn-based system.  Four characters are active at any given time, although those remaining on the bench also gain XP.  Considering that you can only swap fighters while stationed at a campfire, sharing XP is definitely welcome.<\/p>\n<p>Enemies land in three rows, with those further back being more susceptible to range than melee attacks.  The AI \u200b\u200bdemonstrates a basic understanding of tactics, although this mostly results in defensive enemies using &#8220;Taunt&#8221; to draw all attacks towards them.  Mafia types come in various roles;  a group of skeletons may include a swordsman who tanks, two archers with elemental arrows and a sorcerer to heal the wounded or summon new units. <\/p>\n<p>While normal attacks are always accessible, any unique spell or elemental ability consumes energy.  And some require a sizable chunk to activate.  Characters regain energy by skipping a turn.  Thus, battles are as much about managing resources as they are about targeting the opponent&#8217;s weak spot.  Operencia keeps things interesting by adding team attacks, summons, enhancement spells, and passives.<\/p>\n<p>Operencia&#8217;s difficulty settings focus on punishing bad planning rather than altering the battles themselves.  So, the fight can be a little too easy.  By allowing yourself to execute some degree of strategy, battles are more likely to test the player&#8217;s patience than skill.  Due to the somewhat slow attack animations, encounters against fodder enemies tend to last a little too long.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>With 13 dungeons lasting a couple of hours each, Operencia doesn&#8217;t stop beyond its welcome.  Exploration is fun and rewarding, especially when it comes to some of the endgame puzzles.  Although fatigue eventually sets in, the proper combat system has enough depth to support a 30-hour campaign.
