It was exhilarating to command a squadron, or &#8220;spear,&#8221; of four mechanical warriors piloting their finely tuned battle mechs in a strategic brawl.<\/p>\n<p>BattleTech offers some of the most satisfying turn-based strategy gameplay I&#8217;ve experienced in this generation.  However, those moments of brilliance on the battlefield are often hidden behind some dull design choices and a story that seems to stick together. Check out the game&#8217;s HUD.  There is a lot of information to consider in the decisions you make for each battlemech&#8217;s turn.<\/p>\n<p>But the number of variations you have to juggle forms a seamless process once you wrap your head around it.  Like any good turn-based strategy game, positioning, preparation and thinking ahead of your opponents are vital elements.  BattleTech is based on these basic principles.  A variety of weapons, skills and environmental factors contribute to your unit&#8217;s overall effectiveness. <\/p><div id=\"forum-282580634\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>For example, every move must end with you choosing the direction your battlemech will be facing.  Such an action requires careful thought as the angle of your perspective determines which enemies you can target and which sections of your mech&#8217;s armor will be most exposed to hostile assaults.  Therefore, precise positioning on the battlefield is critical as you can use environmental benefits, such as a protective forest, to tip the scales in your favor.<\/p>\n<p>I liked the planning that had to go into every move as it gave such weight to even the most mundane decisions.  I had to balance the risk of engaging all my weapons on a significant target with the possibility of overheating my battlemech and making it desperately more vulnerable as a result.  And like any thoughtful strategic RPG, every moment really felt like a dice roll, even if you did everything possible to remove luck from the equation as much as possible.<\/p><div id=\"forum-376149371\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649457219_120_BattleTech-Review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8410\"><\/figure>\n<h2>The consequences of failure<\/h2>\n<p>Part of what it gives <em>BattleTech <\/em>mechanical so much gravity is that the consequences of failure, or even a costly victory, will have a monumental effect on your operations outside of battles.  Battlemechs take time and resources to repair.  Battlewarriors remain dead if they fall in combat.  This can lead to heartbreaking scenarios where one of your favorite drivers is lost forever.  (Especially after a rare and brutal one-hit kill by the enemy.) These scenarios can be frustrating as there is no reliable method to repeat your mistakes.  Loading the previous save may make an otherwise constructive game hour obsolete. <\/p>\n<p>Life as a mercenary also carries its own stresses.  In an effort to constantly improve my crew and battle mechs, I found that the effort of completing willing customer contracts could get a little repetitive.  This is compounded by the need for breaks between missions to repair any necessary repairs.  Ultimately, this only presents itself as padding for an already methodical game.  Battlemech customization has a satisfying cycle.  But the UI aboard the ship has a clunky flow.  Hence, navigating the appropriate menus is more of a chore than an exciting discovery.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>The BattleTech story also feels awkward and half-cooked compared to precise combat.  It is a coup between weary members of the royal family that has repercussions across the galaxy.  On the surface, it sounds like an epic space opera that will change and transform with each story-based mission.<\/p>\n<p>However, while I loved choosing the backstory for my character, those choices had little impact.  The plot unfolds whenever you feel like it.  There is also some dubbing.  In the end, I found the personal stories of my battle experiences far more engaging than those told in the videos.  And while there is a lot of world-building and lore thrown into the mix, it will most likely appeal only to diehard aficionados.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649457220_439_BattleTech-Review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28000\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Thankfully, the developers realize that the main focus should be on skirmishes.  Therefore, the replayability of these battles is as easy as starting a new campaign and seeing where the contracts take you.  There is also a fun player versus player multiplayer mode that will test your skills against friends around the world.<\/p>\n<p>BattleTech is a safe foray into the world of strategic RPGs offering slow paced but consistently engaging robotic combat.  There is certainly a learning curve to overcome in order to master each of the gaming systems and logistics management.
