For those unfamiliar with it, Company of Heroes 2 is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega.  Set at the height of World War II, the vanilla campaign follows a Soviet Red Army company from their brutal combat retreat through Western Russia in 1941 to victory in the Battle of Berlin four years later. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Company-of-Heroes-2-Ardennes-Assault-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22144\" width=\"1024\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Real-time strategy<\/h2>\n<p>What differentiates Company of Heroes 2 from other real-time strategy games is the emphasis on unit placement, terrain and cover.  Placing units inside vehicles and structures is nothing new (the original Command &#038; Conquer) had similar mechanics since 1995. But Company of Heroes 2 allows infantry and artillery units to take refuge behind walls, trees, bags of sand and even vehicle wrecks, most of which can be destroyed with explosives by ramming them with armored vehicles.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2481913565\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The game goes so far as to introduce what it calls negative cover, where units take extra damage when in open roads or empty fields.  Soldiers are also somewhat good at taking cover themselves, although it can be difficult to position a large army correctly.  Heavy machine gunners, in particular, seem to have an annoying habit of taking the wrong path and taking time to reposition themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Infantry squads can collect discarded weapons, up to and including artillery pieces, from the battlefield, making it easier to recover lost units from more expensive units and even steal them from the enemy.  This might not seem like a big deal, but a well-positioned anti-tank gun can turn the tide of a battle.  There is something to be said for turning the costly toys of the enemies against them. Players start by selecting which three of the four companies (mechanized, airborne, support, or ranger) they will use during the campaign.  The first three come standard with the &#8220;Ardennes Assault&#8221; expansion, but Rangers are only available to players who purchase the &#8220;Fox Company&#8221; DLC pack.<\/p>\n<p>Each company has access to unique units and abilities.  Matching the right specialization with the right mission goes a long way in achieving victory.  Each company has a health score that runs out when it takes losses or retires from missions.  Health can be restored by leaving the company idle in a friendly territory or by spending requirement points earned by successfully completing missions.<\/p><div id=\"forum-376854368\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<h2>Battles<\/h2>\n<p>Most battles are created dynamically, with randomly generated objectives and additional modifiers.  The predefined missions will also feature randomized bonus objectives.  The forces of a defeated enemy will group with other battalions, giving them bonuses such as more troops and better equipment.  Periodically, the game will also offer special incentives, such as reinforcements or unique units, as a reward for clearing specific sectors within a set amount of time.  These factors combined mean that two playthroughs will never be the same.<\/p>\n<p>In theory, these new features add both substantial replay value and additional levels to the strategic aspects of the game.  But the developers haven&#8217;t done enough to enrich some of them.  Companies cannot support each other beyond blocking an enemy&#8217;s retreat, and their respective upgrade trees are narrow and insignificant.  The only really interesting idea is the corporate health system, but this has its problems.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649483241_40_Company-of-Heroes-2-Ardennes-Assault-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22146\" width=\"1024\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Criticisms<\/h2>\n<p>Mistakes made early on when the player is still getting used to the new units and mechanics can easily haunt the rest of their campaign.  In a fast-paced game like Company of Heroes 2, one or two wrong calls are enough to make a mission fail.  A single bankruptcy can reduce a company&#8217;s strength by more than a third.  It&#8217;s all too easy to end up in an impossible-to-win situation, and the game is long enough that starting over seems like a chore.<\/p>\n<p>In turn-based games like XCOM or Fire Emblem, the realization that your next move could have a profound effect on the rest of the game increases the tension and excitement, but that&#8217;s because the player has time to think about everything in advance.  In Ardennes Assault, it was just annoying.  It doesn&#8217;t completely ruin the game, but it&#8217;s such a significant component that my feelings towards it ended up coloring my attitude towards the expansion as a whole.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>While I don&#8217;t hate Ardennes Assault, I didn&#8217;t enjoy it as much as the vanilla campaign.  Soviet missions were just as challenging without the added frustration of a poorly implemented gimmick, and the writing is good enough for an RTS.  If you&#8217;re interested in trying it out for yourself and don&#8217;t already have the base game, you can get the standalone version available on Steam, which includes the vanilla campaign and multiplayer content.
