Dystopia?  Check.  Throwback graphics?  Check.  Metroidvania?  Check back!<\/p>\n<p>While the concepts aren&#8217;t super fancy, the actual gameplay is truly unique. As a result, the actual texture you get is paper thin.<\/p>\n<p>Kunai is all about a dystopian future full of evil robots.  Humanity has long since disappeared, but resistance to evil robots survives in the form of robotic freedom fighters.<\/p><div id=\"forum-292970431\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, they cannot face these evil robots alone.  That&#8217;s why good robots woke you from your sleep.  As a robot named Tabby, you must face the hordes of robots with just your wits and the weapons you can find.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Kunai-review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8667\"><\/figure>\n<h2>A decent metroidvania<\/h2>\n<p>What kind of game is Kunai?  It is best suited to the Metroidvania genre.<\/p><div id=\"forum-3873688821\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>If the term isn&#8217;t familiar, it refers to games that are very similar (you guessed it) Metroid and Castlevania.  This means there is an emphasis on finding new weapons and upgrades to help you unlock parts of the map that were previously inaccessible.<\/p>\n<p>Being part of this genre helps and hurts Kunai.  On the one hand, it&#8217;s a very funny example of why this genre is still so popular.  At the same time, he never reaches the heights of the franchises he&#8217;s copying.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>More style than substance<\/h2>\n<p>You can probably tell from a single glance that Kunai is a very elegant game.  In many ways, it puts style over substance, although that&#8217;s not always a bad thing.<\/p>\n<p>For example, it would be pretty accurate to say that the most memorable feature of this game is the character design.  It&#8217;s easy to get distracted simply by watching Tabby&#8217;s different expressions as she launches into her latest challenge.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that style, there&#8217;s no super deep or super long game waiting for you.  But creating a character whose style and design can rightfully stand alongside Samus Aran and Simon Belmont is an achievement in and of itself.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Kunai-review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8668\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Cool aesthetics<\/h2>\n<p>Kunai&#8217;s style actually extends to the use of color.  Notably, the aesthetics of this game are much more subdued than you might expect.<\/p>\n<p>It is tempting to turn these kinds of games into bright reflections of the whole rainbow.  The rationale for such a choice is that if your characters look cartoonish, then you might as well make everything look like an old Saturday morning cartoon.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, Kunai mostly sticks to a muted, muted color palette.  And that makes its thoughtful use of brighter colors (like the red of an evil robot&#8217;s computer monitor screen) stand out even more.<\/p>\n<p>It is not a colorful game.  It&#8217;s a game with a unique and defined aesthetic, and it&#8217;s something we love to see.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Swing low, sweet Tabby Bot<\/h2>\n<p>The challenge of any genre game is that it has to stand out from the rest of the genre entries.  How does Kunai do it?  The answer is in the name!<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;kunai&#8221; in question are basically grappling hooks.  With one in each hand, you must learn to navigate the levels and beat bosses using your crazy swinging skills.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, this creates an effect very similar to a good Spider-Man game.  You&#8217;ll have so much fun swinging that it&#8217;s sometimes more fun to travel through each screen than actually battling the bad guys.<\/p>\n<p>That swing eventually gets pretty ruthless, though.  If you are not willing to master the skill, you will not be able to overcome the many challenges of this game.<\/p>\n<h2>Going back through the Apocalypse<\/h2>\n<p>Even for big fans of the Metroidvania genre, there is one major annoyance: a lot of going back.<\/p>\n<p>Kunai has many areas which are inaccessible when you first see them.  Next, you will get weapons and accessories (like a rocket launcher) that can help you open these areas.<\/p>\n<p>However, this makes the gaming experience very non-linear.  Also, you need to remember where these areas are and be willing to go back every time you get a new item.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, this has always been a feature of games like Metroid.  But if you don&#8217;t have a big head for navigation and maps, it can make navigating the Kunai a real hassle.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649529362_844_Kunai-review.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8930\"><\/figure>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Short (but not simple)<\/h2>\n<p>Another possible drawback of the Kunai is in the eye of the beholder: relatively speaking, it is quite short.<\/p>\n<p>Most people can beat this game in about six hours.  And if you want to unlock every little secret, it shouldn&#8217;t take more than eight hours anyway.<\/p>\n<p>While a short runtime can be a relief for too busy gamers for something longer, Kunai might be a little too short for someone who really wants to get lost in a virtual world. <\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Is it worth spending time at the Kunai?  Absolutely.<\/p>\n<p>The art style is cute and the aesthetic is exquisite.  The gameplay is fast and focused, but it never feels unfair or deliberately annoying.  And the game&#8217;s sense of humor and delightful character design will captivate you as soon as you start playing.<\/p>\n<p>And who knows?
