EA has released a number of critically acclaimed titles bearing the name of the franchise, but in recent times it has lost its luster.<\/p>\n<p>Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat has the unenviable task of trying to re-establish the series.  Not an easy task in an age where there are so many great racing games.  Especially when EA seems to be unable to decide what they want Need for Speed \u200b\u200bto be.  Can the game reach the ancient glories of the franchise or does it once again fall into oblivion?<\/p><div id=\"forum-2083206852\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Need-for-Speed-\u200b\u200bHeat-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7266\"><\/figure>\n<p>Racing games don&#8217;t really need a lot of history.  This is probably why most stick to a simple career mode where you advance through the ranks.  Having a proper narrative distracts from what the players want to do \u2060\u2014 run in fast cars.  But if a developer wants to include a story, he can at least make sure it&#8217;s not a jumbled mess.  Ghost Games definitely hasn&#8217;t heeded that advice.<\/p>\n<p>The premise sees the player arriving in a fictional version of Miami known as Palm City.  Here you meet Lieutenant Frank Mercer, who has set himself the goal of completely stopping all illegal road racing.  It&#8217;s the cliched story of a relatively unknown protagonist who arrives to save the day while battling the odds.  Unfortunately, everything soon begins to unravel as the narrative wanders aimlessly without actually telling any story.<\/p><div id=\"forum-3551254403\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>In the end, the plot ends up being a mess that doesn&#8217;t make sense.  Exactly what the motives of the characters are is never made clear.  Meanwhile, references to obscure organizations and people are never explained.  There is no cohesive storyline.  The only saving grace is that the story is fortunately short.  Even with all the filler you have to go through to unlock missions, it only lasts a few hours.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649539253_148_Need-for-Speed-\u200b\u200bHeat-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7265\"><\/figure>\n<p>As part of the existential crisis that the Need for Speed \u200b\u200bfranchise has been through, new games have almost always included some sort of gimmick.  This time it&#8217;s a day-night system that changes the way the game works.  During the day they take part in perfectly legitimate races on pre-established circuits.  However, once night falls, the action turns into illegal street racing that grabs the attention of the police.<\/p><div id=\"forum-133382590\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The point of this seems to be that each tempo setting rewards you in a separate way.  Daytime races give you money while after-hours races increase your reputation.  While this idea has potential, the way the developers implement it in Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat doesn&#8217;t work well.  The reason is that you need to raise both cash and reps to buy upgrades and new cars.  Getting too much of one effectively hampers progress, so players end up having to switch between modes every few races.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>In terms of actual driving, Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat is a mixed bag.  It is a real arcade racing game with light and agile cars.  The core mechanics are solid enough and the controls are responsive, giving you the ability to be gentle with your driving.  Several cars also have unique handling characteristics, and drifting is a precise art that is satisfying to master.<\/p>\n<p>The developer seems to have aimed primarily at accessibility.  So anyone can pick up this game and start running relatively quickly, but there isn&#8217;t much room to improve your skills.  On the other hand, running at night is frustrating.  The cops are able to instantly catch up with you in seconds, ruining your race.  For each positive point there are one or more negative aspects to accompany.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649539254_555_Need-for-Speed-\u200b\u200bHeat-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7267\"><\/figure>\n<p>Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat looks and sounds great for the most part.  The changing light levels between day and night underline the high quality of everything shown.  Both the vehicles and the environments are detailed and the whole experience has its own unique style.  Meanwhile, the soundtrack further softens this idea.  The two cycles have their own distinctive sound, which gives them very different atmospheres.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of performance, Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat struggles to run smoothly.  Crashes are frequent and throughout history I have experienced several reboots.  While autosave the game means I haven&#8217;t lost any progress, it&#8217;s still annoying to have to restart the game from scratch.  Starting each race also creates a certain amount of slowdown.  The game engine seems unable to cope with all the lights, smoke and cars on the screen at the same time.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Need for Speed \u200b\u200bHeat may be the best game in the series for some time.  But to be honest it&#8217;s not very good.  Recent games in the franchise have been shoddy, and this latest installment has almost become an acceptable driver.  There is no real innovation to be had while many elements remain as annoying as ever.
