The outer surface has a wonderfully smooth texture that looks almost ceramic. Inside, the case has a matte black finish with a really nice texture. The edges of the lid are perfectly polished and the hinge has very little play. The lid stays in place even when it’s open and isn’t likely to snap shut while you’re trying to get the earbuds out.

The overall build quality and feel of the case are top notch. Small details like the reassuring weight, the solid sound of opening and closing the lid, and the soft light of the white status LED through the plastic on the front indicate that a lot has been put into designing the case even though it looks similar to many other models. on the market. Having tested most of those, I can say that very few look good and feel good in the hand.

The construction of the earphones is nothing special. In fact, I was quite disappointed with how easy it is for them to look dirty after being in contact with skin oils, which for a product designed to fit inside the ears isn’t very well thought out. The Charcoal pattern also makes this pretty easy to spot. They are also annoyingly difficult to take out of the case, and the small, rounded design makes them impractical to place inside the ears, especially with sausage fingers.

The good thing is that both the earbuds and the case have a certain level of water resistance. The earbuds are IPX4 rated while the case is IPX2. Neither will survive immersion in the water, but small splashes, rain or sweat shouldn’t cause any problems.

Comfort

Based on personal experience, the Pixel Buds Pro were comfortable to use. They have a relatively small design that should fit most people unless you have particularly small ears.

The supplied silicone tips are soft and flexible. There are three sizes available, with the middle one applied by default. The tips of the ears do not go too deep into the ears and are only positioned a few millimeters. The tips of the ears are extremely flexible and, as a result, tend to turn outward from friction almost every time you pull them out of the ears.

In practice, the Pixel Buds Pro are no different to wear than most other well-designed earbuds. I have been able to wear them for long periods of time but, as always, your mileage may vary.

Software

Pixel Buds Pro have a simple pairing process. Gems automatically enter pairing mode the first time you open them. After that, you can press and hold the button on the back of the case to enable pairing mode. Google Fast Pair is also supported on Android devices.

Once paired, you can install the optional Pixel Buds app to access additional features. This app is only available on Android, so the limited features it offers are not available on other platforms. If you’re using a Pixel phone, then nothing needs to be installed as the feature is built into a system-wide app.

Through the app, you can configure the Google Assistant feature to work hands-free with your earbuds, enable Find Device, customize touch controls, enable the Volume Equalizer feature, check the headliner, and update the firmware. You can also configure multi-point and audio switching.

Touch controls have limited customization. The only configurable action is tap and hold, while all others are locked to what is set by default. You can also disable all or none of them. The gestures work well and are followed by a quick, reassuring beep.

The ANC modes can be changed from the app but can also be activated via touch gestures on the earbuds themselves. You can configure which switches are available for gestures.

Pixel Buds software

An interesting feature here is Volume EQ. This increases the bass and treble response when listening at lower volumes. It gradually increases the effectiveness as you go down in volume, becoming particularly noticeable below 30%. Above around 50% it doesn’t make much difference and at higher volumes it doesn’t.

A useful feature to have is the multipoint, which allows you to pair the earbuds to two devices at the same time. Using the audio switching feature, the earbuds can also automatically switch between the two if you’re listening to music on one and receiving a call on the other.

Unfortunately, the Pixel Buds Pro ran into some notable software issues during my testing. The first problem concerned the pressure relief function. Google claims to actively measure the pressure inside the ear canal and relieve it, presumably using magic as the company never revealed how the system works.

It turns out that the system is not without its problems. There were times when wearing the earphones triggered the pressure relief system and doing weird things with the sound. There seems to be a wrong way to insert the earphones; if you insert them too deep or push and twist them too much, the pressure relief system goes crazy. The resulting sound is like trying to hear things underwater. And you can tell it’s the software freaking out and not your ears as the sound often goes back and forth as the system keeps figuring out what to do.

The other problem was with the active noise cancellation system. At some point the system just broke down, when the active ANC mode started playing external sounds through the speakers, but only in parts of the frequency range. This sounded different from transparency mode, which worked fine but made ANC mode unusable.

The ANC occasionally tends to break in one ear momentarily and then fixes on its own. Other times the sound itself does weird things with the stereo effect only to return to normal a second later.

Most of these problems resolve themselves or can be solved by placing the earbuds inside the case. However, the aforementioned broken ANC issue required a full factory reset to fix it.

I also noticed that the Pixel Buds app was loading slowly at times. The app itself opens correctly, but many of the options within the Pixel Buds Pro-specific app can take a second or two to load. There was a time when the options simply refused to load and the app had to be restarted a few times.

While the Pixel Buds Pro are still relatively new, they’re not new enough to have basic software issues, especially since they’ve already received a couple of software updates since their launch. I’ve tested many much cheaper headsets that didn’t have any issues even before their official release by companies with far less experience and resources than Google.

Performance

Audio quality

The Pixel Buds Pro have a single 11mm dynamic driver. They support Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity with SBC and AAC codecs.

The Pixel Buds Pro have a fairly typical V-shaped sound that feels like a close match to the Harman in-ear target.

Starting at the low end, the Pixel Buds Pro have a strong emphasis in the low and mid-bass region. The low notes have a deep, palpable rumble and thud. There seems to be some care to ensure that the lows don’t pour into the lower mids and that the bass itself never becomes overbearing and boomy. As for the bass, this is quite tasteful in its execution.

At the other end of the frequency spectrum, treble performance is a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, the Pixel Buds Pro are quite bright in the upper mid and low treble range, which can make vocals, especially feminine ones, shrill and shrill at times. On top of that, the sound is attenuated a little, which results in a muffled sound of the high notes of the treble, which smooths out some of the “s” and “t” sounds. While this region isn’t usually dominated by many sounds, a muffled top end sucks the life out of the lower treble sounds and makes them a little fuzzy.

Mid-range performance is mostly pretty good. The instruments and the male voice have decent timbre and tonal balance. The mids, however, take a bit of a back seat to the bass and treble regions, which are much more aggressive in their rendition. And since we mainly tend to adjust our volume for the most prominent sounds, which in this case would be the bass or upper mids, the rest of the mids tend to sound quieter and pushed back a bit in the mix.

Details and resolution are somewhat lacking, due to the choice of codecs, audio processing or drivers. The honky mid-high range creates the illusion of more detail, but simply enhances the existing detail, and the lack of good high-end response makes the sound a little dull in places. It also affects the imaging and soundstage, neither of which is in any way noteworthy.

Compared to the Sony WF-1000XM4, the Pixel Buds Pro have more emphasized bass and upper mids. This makes them sound more exciting while the Sony has a more relaxed tuning that feels a little more balanced in comparison. Depending on your preferences, you may like one more than the other although neither is technically superior.

Overall, despite the Pro in the name, the Pixel Buds Pro’s sound is very mainstream. The average person should be perfectly satisfied with it, while an experienced audiophile should find it harmless enough for travel or outdoor use. I personally tend to stick to my collection of wired IEMs, but I was reasonably happy to use Pixel Buds Pro while out for a walk as the sound quality was good enough for that purpose.

Microphone

The Pixel Buds Pro have good microphone performance. The voice sounds a little fuzzy even when there is little or no background noise. When it is particularly loud around, the noise comes but the voice remains audible and in focus.

Overall microphone quality is adequate for short calls, but it’s not a major feature of these earbuds and shouldn’t be your priority for voice calls.

Noise cancellation

The Pixel Buds Pro feature active noise cancellation using a dedicated custom processor. There is also a transparency mode included, which has become the norm these days.

The ANC’s performance was good but disappointing compared to the best in the industry. Pixel Buds Pro can eliminate most of the low-frequency hum, but sometimes higher-frequency sounds can still penetrate.

The transparency mode was also not very good. The sound has a natural tonality and doesn’t sound robotic like other products on the market. At the same time, the sound is very dull and muffled, which makes things blurry and indistinct.

ANC mode also has a problem where it can inject some of its own noise into the mix. When activated and deactivated in a very quiet environment, the active ANC mode has a louder background noise than the deactivated ANC, as the ANC adds a high-frequency hiss when enabled. This is not audible when literally something is ringing, but it is noticeable when it is silent.

Compared to the Sony WF-1000XM4, the Pixel Buds Pro do worse. Sony has far superior ANC performance and a decent transparency mode. They also don’t have weird background noise problems. They also didn’t have any of the software issues I faced with the ANC on the Pixel Buds Pro.

Latency

Pixel Buds Pro mostly have good latency performance for watching video content. They tend to sync nicely instantly when the video starts, and unless they get messed up, things stay that way. However, doing things like changing the video resolution in the YouTube app or adjusting the playback position can cause the sync to stop, and it takes several seconds for it to correct itself.

As usual, I wouldn’t recommend Bluetooth headsets for gaming unless it’s strictly casual. Also, the Pixel Buds Pro don’t have any low-latency modes for gaming.

Connectivity

Despite the myriad of software glitches, the Pixel Buds Pro maintained a stable connection to the source device at all times, and no connection drops were observed during testing.

The multipoint functionality also worked as expected, with both source devices remaining plugged into the earbuds and the earbuds automatically managing the source device for audio and calls.

Battery

The Pixel Buds Pro have a claimed battery life of 7 hours with ANC enabled and 11 hours with ANC disabled. Google also claims that 5 minutes of charging can provide 1 hour of playback with ANC and 15 minutes of charging can provide 3 hours of playback with ANC.

In my tests, the Pixel Buds Pro played for an impressive 8 hours and 15 minutes with ANC. With ANC disabled, they played an exceptional 13 hours.

The 5-minute charge provided 1 hour and 17 minutes of playback while the 15-minute charge provided 3 hours and 22 minutes of playback.

Conclusion

The Pixel Buds Pro are priced at $ 199. For that price, they compete with the Sony WF-1000XM4 and the newly launched Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Pro. They both cost a little more at $ 230, but they both also have older generation models that cost a lot less these days and have a similar feature set.

The Pixel Buds Pro have some useful things for them. I liked the way the case was designed and built. The audio quality is good enough for the average user and on par with the best available among wireless earbuds. And the battery life is excellent.

On the other hand, the active noise cancellation and transparency mode performance is above average at best. The quality of the microphone is also nothing exceptional. The design of the earphone is a bit complicated and difficult to take out of the case and put it inside the ears.

But by far the worst thing about the Pixel Buds Pro is the current state of the software, which presents a variety of problems on a daily basis and the longer I use them, the more problems seem to arise. Coming from a software giant, this is inexcusable.

The good thing is that many of the problems can be fixed via software updates while improving performance along the way. But until that happens, I would recommend using the WF-1000XM4 or even the older Samsung Galaxy Buds Pro, which is heavily discounted nowadays.

The Pixel Buds Pro are Google’s latest pair of wireless earbuds.
