However, it&#8217;s not just the visual style that helps this first person shooter stand out.  Void Bastards also abandons many of the conventions established for the genre to invent innovative game mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>But what makes Void Bastards stand out even more is that it appeared out of nowhere.  Until its launch in May 2019, the title had little coverage, apparently in the light. This sets up the strange morality required to make progress in the game.  After being freeze-dried and sent into space, you are brought back to life to prevent your prison from falling into disrepair.  The Ark of the Void is trapped in the Sargasso Nebula and you need to find the parts to keep it functioning. <\/p>\n<p>Unlike most other shooters, Void Bastards is procedurally generated.  This means that there is no set layout for the Ark of the Void or the characters to associate with.  This is because each new game sees you randomly assigned a prisoner from the vast confines of the Ark of the Void.  All you know is that space pirates are operating in the area and the former crew has to deal with.  These have been horrifically transformed and now pose a threat to you and your home. <\/p><div id=\"forum-1248329260\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, that&#8217;s more or less as far as the narrative is concerned.  So, if you are expecting a strong story, you will be disappointed.  However, it does a good job of providing an interesting setting and providing a platform for gameplay.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649631108_393_Void-Bastards-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5638\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<p>Void Bastards&#8217; main hook is managing your resources.  Of course, it might seem odd in a shooter where the answer is usually to shoot all the guns.  As a prisoner exploring the void of space, however, your resources are scarce.  Players therefore have to think carefully about everything they do.  Each action consumes fuel, food and oxygen. <\/p><div id=\"forum-2147735833\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>With all those in short supply, Void Bastards quickly becomes as much about planning as it is about fighting enemies.  Each ship is also randomly spawned so you never know what you&#8217;re going to face.  It is therefore impossible to know what you will need in each environment. <\/p>\n<p>Upon death, you start again as a completely different prisoner.  They can keep any equipment you recovered, but they re-roll their traits and abilities.  These can range from being able to use certain weapons to having harmful effects.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>For example, one prisoner I took control of was a smoker.  This meant that he would casually cough and alert nearby enemies.  Dealing with these different traits is a clever mechanic that makes you think about how to approach encounters.  You need to actively consider your character and change your play style accordingly. <\/p>\n<p>Combat is often a last resort as it is just so dangerous.  However, fighting in Void Bastards is also a joy.  Your vulnerability makes any potential battle tense and full of drama.  It is thrilling to feel like you are never safe, constantly at risk from everything around you.  The wide range of enemy types and weapons also allows for many different tactics. <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649631108_636_Void-Bastards-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5637\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<p>While Borderlands and XIII helped popularize cel-shaded graphics, Void Bastards takes it to the next level.  The images are stunning.  I can&#8217;t think of another game that so encapsulates the idea of \u200b\u200bliving within a comic book world.  It really feels like living inside the pages of a comic. <\/p>\n<p>Seeing such vivid colors is a pleasure, but even more impressive is that the developers integrate it with the gameplay.  Comic book readers will be familiar with the sound effects indicated by specific types of text.  The developers use this text in the game, cleverly indicating what kind of enemies might be in a room from the noises they make.<\/p>\n<p>Void Bastards looks a lot like a British game.  Obvious influences include Douglas Adams <em>Hitchhiker&#8217;s Guide to the Galaxy<\/em>, especially for the ship&#8217;s sarcastic AI The voice acting for this character is superb, as are the rest of the performances.  Enemies often have big jokes or snippets of dialogue that will make you laugh.  This gives the game a real sense of humor and a defined personality. <\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Void Bastards deserves a lot of praise.  It is an intelligent and innovative game.  While it doesn&#8217;t present new ideas, it uses existing concepts in new and interesting ways.  Even with the lack of tradition and history, it still manages to absorb you into the world.<\/p>\n<p>The fabulous graphics and great voice acting also prevent the action from going stale.
