Following the success of 2017&#8217;s Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, it became clear that more Crash Bandicoot remasters would follow.  Released in June 2019, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a remaster of Crash Team Racing from 1999. Developed by Beenox, it is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.  But how does the remaster hold up 20 years after the game&#8217;s debut?<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Crash-Team-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5795\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Racing<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing people who played the original game will notice is that the karts behave differently.  This time they feel lighter and require a much more thoughtful touch.  The important thing, however, is that it works well.  Despite the delicate nature of handling, the controls feel tight and responsive.  You feel good with the kart under you and soon you will have no problem taking turns.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1453902578\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>On the other hand, getting to grips with the Power Slide is not easy.  If you are familiar with Mario Kart, you will be familiar with the Power Slide.  Yet, in this pilot, it doesn&#8217;t work the same way.  There seems to be less precision when it comes to gliding through corners, but also a greater boost in doing it right.  It&#8217;s a compromise that I think works, as it rewards skill more.  After all, most people can successfully run a Power Slide in Mario Kart, where it therefore offers few benefits.<\/p>\n<p>The various upgrades and weapons you get from the crates are exactly what you would expect from a kart driver.  For example, the Aku Aku mask is like the star in Mario Kart, giving you a temporary boost and invincibility.  Boxes of TNT can blow up opponents, and the collectible Wumpa Fruit lets you upgrade your powers. <\/p><div id=\"forum-3686961721\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The main focus area in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is the single player adventure.  There is a huge spike in difficulty which means beating many of the bosses and the later stages require you to master the races.  In particular, you need to be comfortable using the Power Slide and increasing the mechanics.  Don&#8217;t do this and the races can quickly become frustrating.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649634111_635_Crash-Team-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-review.jpg\" alt=\"Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-5652\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Content<\/h2>\n<p>Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled has a huge amount of content.  Not only does it include everything from the original Crash Team Racing, it also includes content from other titles.  These include both Crash Nitro Kart and Crash Tag Team Racing.  Every single character from these two games has been included as a playable driver.  Even some that were just bosses in previous versions are now available to the player. <\/p><div id=\"forum-4203589802\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Additionally, the developers have introduced characters from other Crash Bandicoot titles.  Spyro and some of his friends are also available thanks to several post-launch updates.  This brings the character roster to an impressive 44. Few other pilots contain such a pool of choices to choose from.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the remaster features kart customization and arenas that were not previously included.  All of which means that this is arguably the most complete driver in the franchise.  Add an adventure mode and you can get a lot of value from Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. <\/p>\n<h2>Microtransactions<\/h2>\n<p>Unfortunately, Activision has introduced microtransactions since the title&#8217;s release.  The first interviews with the developers had stated that these would not be included and the initial version of the game would not.<\/p>\n<p>However, an August update brought in microtransactions, allowing players to purchase Wumpa Coins to purchase additional characters and items.  Players can earn Wumpa Coins normally through play, so they don&#8217;t offer any real advantage.  However, it&#8217;s not a good sign for publishers to have paid options to essentially skip content in their games.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649634111_76_Crash-Team-Racing-Nitro-Fueled-review.jpg\" alt=\"Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-5655\"><\/figure>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<p>Visually, there isn&#8217;t much to talk about as this is exactly what you would expect from a kart driver.  It is not the most graphically impressive game you can play.  However, it does its job quite well and still manages to stay true to the world of Crash Bandicoot.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, there are no real performance issues or glitches.  A nice feature is the ability to choose between soundtracks.  You can switch between the original game music and remastered versions of the songs.  So, if you want to go full nostalgia, the choice is there. <\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>The kart racing genre has long been dominated by Mario Kart.  While many more titles have come to try and dethrone the champion, few have come close.  Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is perhaps the best rival the series has right now.  It is colorful, exciting and a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p>The only real problem is the difficulty spikes in adventure mode and the recently added microtransactions.
