They wanted to take players back to an era of strategic combat and compelling stories.  With the first game in the series receiving widespread critical acclaim, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire certainly had a lot to live up to when it came out in 2018.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Pillars-of-Eternity-II-Deadfire-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Pillars of Eternity II Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-4907\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>As a direct sequel to the original, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire takes place five years later in the world of Eora.  The player assumes the role of the Observer. Much of the action takes place around a group of islands.  So, you can also expect a lot of pirate and ship-to-ship combat.  <\/p>\n<p>The overall plot is so intriguing and well done.  He pushes you to continue the campaign to get to the conclusion. They explore everything from slavery to the power struggles of political factions.  What is striking is how they don&#8217;t seem completely separate from the main storyline.  Rather, they somehow intertwine with the main narrative.  <\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, the story can be experienced in a much more accessible way than the original.  The first game hit the player with writing walls (admittedly very good).  But Pillars of Eternity II takes a more immersive approach.  The dialogue is now almost entirely done through voice acting.  This is a far better solution than text bombing. This is a ship known as The Defiant.  You can use it to traverse the waters surrounding the many islands that make up the Deadfire area.<\/p>\n<p>It is a fitting way to travel when this land is so full of pirates.  However, your ship turns out to be more than just a vehicle.  You have to carefully manage supplies and keep your crew happy to be a successful captain.  This adds strategic depth.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649696912_408_Pillars-of-Eternity-II-Deadfire-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Pillars of Eternity II Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-4908\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Fight<\/h2>\n<p>This brings us to the question of naval warfare.  Obsidian obviously wanted to take ship-to-ship combat in this game with their choice of setting.  It is a brand new addition to the franchise and has noticeable differences from normal combat.<\/p>\n<p>Battles take place in a text-based interface that looks a lot like a text-based adventure game.  Choose your option, whether it&#8217;s moving your ship, firing your broadside cannons or attempting to board the enemy ship.  While it may be engaging to some extent, it&#8217;s not as intuitive or strategic as it could have been.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The real combat still takes most of its hints from the classic RPGs that inspired Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire.  Nothing drastic has changed, but the number of the group has been reduced from six to five, allowing you to better manage everything you are doing during the fights.<\/p>\n<p>This combat system can feel dated at times, especially during encounters where there are large numbers of enemies.  Pausing the game and managing everyone&#8217;s actions sometimes becomes a chaotic mess.  It&#8217;s still functional, it just doesn&#8217;t offer you a way out of a battle feeling like you&#8217;ve totally won thanks to your skills.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649696913_277_Pillars-of-Eternity-II-Deadfire-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Pillars of Eternity II Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-4909\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<p>In terms of presentation, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire is a big improvement over its predecessor.  The setting of a vibrant archipelago allows it to be much more colorful, while retaining the gorgeous graphics that helped make the first game look so good.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been numerous improvements to the game engine that improve on-screen action.  New visual and particle effects make magical attacks appear with greater impact.  Elementary objects, like fire and water, now have an extra layer of realism \u2060, something that is very important considering the huge amount of ocean you will encounter.<\/p>\n<p>All of this is complemented by a beautiful soundtrack that elevates everything you can see with drama, tension and excitement.  <\/p>\n<p>These game engine changes have also given developers the ability to make additions in other areas.  Compared to the original title, there can be many more characters on the screen at the same time, and each of them seems to have a larger arsenal of animations that they can use.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire has an adequate day and night schedule and a dynamic weather system.  The characters now not only stay up all day, but have their own routines based on the time of day.  Everything contributes to making the world feel alive and compelling.  <\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>It would always be difficult for Obsidian to match what they had achieved with the original Pillars of Eternity.  However, with Deadfire they managed to improve on some of the flaws of their first effort.  They also introduced a number of elements that add further depth to the gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, Pillars of Eternity II can stretch too much at times.  And the main mission may be a little shorter than you would like.
