In Vampyr, Dontnod Entertainment proves that it doesn&#8217;t shy away from new ideas.  Vampyr feels like a departure from the usual Dontnod fair, which includes Remember Me and Life is Strange.  The studio&#8217;s willingness to experiment is felt throughout the game.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Set against the backdrop of the 1918-1920 Spanish flu pandemic, Vampyr follows the newly coined vampire Dr. Jonathan Reid.  Left for dead in a mass grave, he wakes up as a vampire. He soon finds himself drawn into the machinations of powerful vampires and ancient secret societies, both human and otherwise.<\/p>\n<p>There are also many mundane citizens (but only marginally less conspiratorial) who populate the streets of London. The feature is somewhat reminiscent of Arkane Studios&#8217; Dishonored chaos mechanic.<\/p>\n<p>Killing an NPC and performing other evil deeds causes each of the four districts to deteriorate further as disease and unrest take hold.  As the district&#8217;s health declines, people die or disappear, enemies become more numerous, and dangerous creatures spread to new areas of the city.<\/p><div id=\"forum-4102582808\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Unlike Dishonored, however, an effort has been made to flesh out individual citizens.  Players feel that their actions affect the lives of real people rather than an abstract global variable.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Moral system<\/h2>\n<p>This leads to the game&#8217;s main moral dilemma.  Combat produces only a symbolic amount of experience points.  Instead, the quickest way to unlock new skills is to feed on the citizens of London.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of experience gained varies from citizen to citizen.  It depends on the quality of the individual&#8217;s blood, which represents his physical and mental health.  You can increase the quality of a citizen&#8217;s blood by using Reid&#8217;s ability as a doctor to cure various diseases.  You can also increase the quality of the blood by completing side missions, called investigations, for the character in question.  Players determined to maintain Reid&#8217;s humanity by not eating his friends will find themselves perpetually under-leveled as they traverse the monster-infested streets and vigilantes.<\/p>\n<p>Even on normal difficulty, the combat is challenging enough that the temptation never goes away.  This adds a lot of depth and nuance to what would otherwise be a black and white morality system.  You may not end up swallowing that sad dismissed hospital patient with low psychic stamina.  But after dying three times in a row to the same bunch of thugs, he&#8217;s definitely going to cross your mind.  <\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649711574_499_Vampire-Review.png\" alt=\"Vampire Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-4987\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<p>The game cycle is split between a loosely Dark Souls-inspired combat engine and an investigative aspect.  This investigative aspect is linked to blood quality and district health mechanics.<\/p>\n<p>But vaguely it is the watchword.  If the developers drew inspiration from combat in Dark Souls, they tweaked it significantly.  But combat still relies on dodging, stamina management and attack timing to land when the enemy is most vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Dark Souls, enemies have what Vampyr calls a stun bar in addition to the usual HP gauge.  Ranged and ranged weapon attacks deal stun damage in addition to normal health damage.  When their stun bars are depleted, the targets fall to the ground.  This leaves them vulnerable to the attack of Reid&#8217;s vampiric bite.  This is the primary means of collecting blood, which is consumed to fuel Reid&#8217;s other supernatural abilities.  <\/p>\n<h2>Fight<\/h2>\n<p>While the gameplay makes a good impression overall, it&#8217;s not without its flaws.  Combat works flawlessly on the open streets of London.  But the same cannot be said when fighting inside buildings.  Narrow hallways and small, cluttered rooms don&#8217;t leave enough room to maneuver.  This problem is compounded by the frequency with which enemies are able to stun the player.  Skals mutated vampires, in particular, are very prone to this.  And the Skals tend to prefer abandoned buildings and narrow sewer tunnels which cause more problems.<\/p>\n<p>The lighting engine doesn&#8217;t do the player any favors either.  While Vampyr is an incredibly atmospheric game, those inky shadows do a great job of obscuring enemies&#8217; movements.  More than once, I&#8217;ve been caught off guard by a Skal throwing himself out of the shadows to give Reid a taste of his own neck-biting medicine.<\/p>\n<p>Vampire abilities are reasonably varied, but I found myself using the same two for most of the game.  Even against elite bosses and enemies, I rarely felt the need to significantly change my tactics to win a fight.  While the combat remains challenging enough to never get boring, the little annoyances add up.  So, the story and the characters are what ultimately brings the game.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649711574_175_Vampire-Review.png\" alt=\"Vampire Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-4988\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Rescue<\/h2>\n<p>I also have mixed feelings about how Vampyr handles savings.  As in Dark Souls, enemies regenerate when the player dies and spent consumables remain gone.  But in Dark Souls, the player respawns at a campfire, one of the few completely safe places in the game.  However, in Vampyr, the player is simply deposited where they were the last time the game was auto-saved.  Unless the player feels like going through the same fight again with half the resources, this can mean a lot of tedious backtracking.<\/p>\n<p>The stated reason for this is to hold the player accountable for their own decisions.  The dead characters remain dead and London suffers the consequences of Reid&#8217;s actions.  This works most of the time.  But Vampyr suffers from dialogue options that don&#8217;t accurately convey what is about to be said.  This is a minor problem for most of the game, but it becomes a problem when some of the major plot decisions aren&#8217;t properly explained.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>As with the rest of Dontnod&#8217;s catalog, Vampyr is a mostly polished game with some great ideas ruined by a less-than-stellar execution.  There is incredible attention to detail in the environments, the atmosphere is incredible and the characters are all well-rounded and believable.<\/p>\n<p>I still ended each session in anticipation of the next one, so consider this a recommendation.
