If you&#8217;re familiar with Dungeons &#038; Dragons, you won&#8217;t have much of a learning curve for Baldur&#8217;s Gate II.  It relies heavily on the inspiration of Dungeons &#038; Dragons, from level to character class to group structure.<\/p>\n<p>For a game released in 2000, there is a lot to think about your options for a starter character.  Baldur&#8217;s Gate II lets you choose everything from gender to race, from class to your starting skills.  Many of your choices affect how other characters interact with you throughout the game. You wake up in a cage being tortured by a wizard named Irenicus.  He seems to know everything about you and your heritage.  He is eager to experiment on you until he unlocks your unlimited power.<\/p>\n<p>His experiments are interrupted when a group of shadow thieves attacks.  Take the opportunity to escape with your friends.  As you begin to explore his complex and the surrounding city, you learn more about Irenicus and his plans. This is due to how well written it is, along with some really hilarious quotes.  He could easily have been a black and white villain.  After all, you see him early enough in the game to understand that he&#8217;s a really twisted individual.  But as the story progresses, you begin to see that every villain is truly the hero of their own story.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Relations<\/h2>\n<p>Talking is an important part of this game, as is reacting to events and people in the city. BioWare is now famous for its romantic play options.  But Baldur&#8217;s Gate II is actually the first game they&#8217;ve implemented that mechanic in.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649715664_333_Baldurs-Gate-II-review.jpg\" alt=\"Baldur's Gate II Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3986\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Visual<\/h2>\n<p>For a nearly 20-year-old game, the graphics are truly impressive.  Somewhere between the two-dimensional pixel sprites and graphics engines of today lies the genius of the designers of Baldur&#8217;s Gate II.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The screen is easy to navigate, thanks to the smart camera angle.  There is also a unique animation for each character in your party.  Most games only in regards to animation of unique sequences across different classes and races.  For example, an elf mage attacks with a different movement than a human warrior.<\/p>\n<p>But in Baldur&#8217;s Gate II, it&#8217;s clear that your companions have unique sequences for themselves, separate from other members of the same race and class.  During a fight, arcs of lightning form between you and your opponent and you can see micro movements as each character speaks, moves and reacts.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Battle<\/h2>\n<p>The battle system is also brilliantly built, allowing you to make it as simple or complex as you wish.  You can give the characters individual commands.  For example, you can assign your wizard to launch Magic Missile.  At the same time, you can send a berserker to destroy the goblins closest to you.<\/p>\n<p>But if you&#8217;re more interested in story than combat mechanics, you can also set default actions, allowing your party to simply follow your move.  This will be based on their default attacks as you ally yourself against the enemy of your choice.<\/p>\n<p>You can also spend hours on side missions enjoying the jokes between your mates.  It adds the necessary depth to a game that might otherwise be considered hack-and-slash.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the characters on your team has their own backstory and a series of missions that you can voluntarily explore.  The decisions you help them make on each of their missions can drastically alter their future.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649715665_959_Baldurs-Gate-II-review.jpg\" alt=\"Baldur's Gate II Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3987\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s rare for a sequel to surpass its original, but Baldur&#8217;s Gate II has rightfully earned this distinction.  While the first game was great, it was the first RPG made by BioWare. <\/p>\n<p>BioWare has taken what they have learned and enhanced it here with everything from storyline to character development to battle interactions.
