That unexpected gift from her fate had seemed like a nice way to start the year. Belly flattened in the snow, Anastasya fired her last rifle shot in the Games competition on February 18. Two days later she was in her home Sumy, the bustling center in northeastern Ukraine, founded in 1650 by Cossacks fleeing Polish persecution. She listened to the TV news with concern, like everyone else, but if she had told her that a week later someone was going to give her a rifle to fire real bullets, she would have called him crazy. Not even in the worst of nightmares would she have imagined herself on the front line targeting the Russian soldiers who invaded her country.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

Now that’s where Anastasya is, gives frugal interviews via Skype, posts short videos on Instagram. To understand what we are experiencing, you should wake up in terror at four in the morning to run to a shelter. You should feel inside the pain we feel when looking at the bestial images that come from Bucha. Can you die like that? Why did the Russians come to kill us? It is not true that they have been deceived, they know exactly what they are doing. I have friends in both Belarus and Russia, nobody asked me how I was. The answers mingle with the redundant accounting of deaths, shelling, horrors and rubble. Commonplaces go up in smoke. Ukrainian women, in the popular imagination, are those who seek shelter towards the border, mothers who collect the essentials to push it inside a miserable trolley along with their dignity. Then you cross the country for as long as you can and meet the women who have refused exile. Like Anastasya.

It is an army animated by feverish initiative. Students, athletes, entrepreneurs or simple employees converted into fighters, war logistics workers, nurses, humanitarian workers. She now she wears a military uniform, she has learned to handle a rifle and brings food to the soldiers on the front.

What happened to Bucha and Borodyanka established an impassable wall between “before” and after “. «We have all seen those images – says Rosa – we talked to the people who were on the spot. We are sure they will not be the last cases of this kind. We talk to each other about what happened, we build strength, but above all now we know very well who we are dealing with. Ours is a diabolical enemy and without rules or mercy. In the first days of the war, a sense of respect for conventions prevailed in us, we spoke with the enemy for the exchange of prisoners, normal issues in battle. But after Bucha the orders changed. We will not take prisoners. If the Russian soldiers want to advance they must know that they will find their grave here. “

Rosa has graceful features, a mild expression that explodes against the image of her holding a weapon. Nevertheless.

“Right now I’m in charge of supplies for the troops. I try to spread a good mood, I try to smile a lot with the soldiers, we play a lot of jokes to keep the mood up. But I also know that if things get bad I’ll be called to shoot. And I assure you that I am ready ».

In Ukraine Google deletes villages and towns from its maps in order not to allow Russians to have geographical references, the virtual sphere has been replaced – not only for directions – by that of authentic relationships, it is the gps of empathy that always works in extraordinary circumstances. People who communicate live, in shelters as well as on the street, touch and hug. The handshakes that supplant the “likes”. Technology, with its encrypted chats, is a simple survival tool. Resistance is entrusted to the relationships of which women pull the strings.

Stefania Sahaidak was a teacher until two months ago, she had tickets for a holiday in Spain in her pocket. Then the first missile landed on Odessa. You have a past as an activist, you worked for Poroshenko’s party, Zelensky’s opponent. Today she took over a small shopping center in the heart of Odessa and turned it into a hub for humanitarian aid: «I never liked Zelensky, but her behavior since the beginning of the war has convinced everyone. We are ready to follow him, he perfectly embodies the sentiment of our people ».

A sentiment that exudes national pride, a glue that is holding people of different backgrounds and cultures together. “We have only one goal, to defeat the Russian invader and take back our freedom. Everyone has a specific role, no matter how big or small, no one holds back. At first I thought about this operation from a humanitarian point of view. Today our work allows us to supply even the troops engaged in the fighting. We collaborate with organizations from all over Europe. At the beginning of the war, even a couple of Russian-run NGOs supported us ».

Stefania pauses, The voice becomes uncertain.

“What happened to Bucha changed everything. I entered this war first with disbelief, then with dismay. I believe that the two years of Covid have helped us, having lived in the emergency has allowed us to adapt quickly to the new situation. On a personal level, I believed it was right to maintain good relations with the Russians opposed to the Putin regime, the friends we communicated with before the conflict. But it’s different now. I have given way to uncontrollable anger. We broke off all relations with all the Russians who supported us. What happens is not the responsibility of one army alone, it is a question of sins that an entire people is guilty of. I can only hope that the Ukrainians will inflict the same suffering on the Russians that we are undergoing ».

In the packages that are about to leave for Cherson, the southern front of the war against the Russians, the girls of Stefania’s organization slip encouragement cards, perhaps with an email address indicated above, in case a soldier wants to write to get distracted.
