The series has long been the go-to when it comes to strategic warfare.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, in recent releases, the developer, Creative Assembly, has lost the ball a bit.  The sequels to previous titles alluded to a series that had become stale. Historical facts and legendary elements of the 14th century Chinese novel <em>The novel of the three kingdoms<\/em> inspired the story, the setting and the characters.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2569332665\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Players take on the role of one of 12 warlords as the Han dynasty begins to collapse.  From here, you have to form alliances and try to gain control of China.  The game begins in 190 AD just as chaos begins to spread across the country and continues until 280 AD.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Mode<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"562\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Total-War-Three-Kingdoms-review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27767\"  ><\/figure>\n<p>To try to bridge the gap between different players, the developers have included two modes in Three Kingdoms: Romance Mode and Records Mode.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2558480818\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Romance mode is more of a character-driven experience, with individual generals endowed with near superhuman powers.  Meanwhile, Records Mode is a more historically accurate representation of the period, when strategy is king.<\/p>\n<p>While Records mode is the kind of experience you expect from a Total War game, it is totally eclipsed by Romance mode.  Sure, it&#8217;s great on its own and offers a nice, clean way to get into battle, but it&#8217;s not as fun as Romance mode.<\/p>\n<p>Romance mode is the culmination of everything Creative Assembly has been doing over the past decade.  It brings together the best aspects of each of their previous titles into one package.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, Romance mode shifts the focus from units to generals.  Tactical thinking and battle awareness are still important.  but individual leaders now play a much more important role.  They have a variety of skills to help turn the tide and can even challenge other generals to a duel.  These can have a huge effect on the outcome of a battle.  <\/p>\n<p>Generals also have their own ambitions and characteristics, which means they have unique play styles.  Unique characteristics also play a role outside of combat, influencing how generals react to alliances or how they rule.  Playing as one faction is noticeably different than playing as another for this reason.  As a result, the war becomes leaner as you are much more invested in the campaign.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649885787_90_Total-War-Three-Kingdoms-review.jpg\" alt=\"Presentation |  Total War: Three Kingdoms Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3374\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Game <\/h2>\n<p>For those new to strategy games or the Total War series, the gameplay can feel overwhelming at first.  Even those familiar with the franchise may be shocked by some of the latest mechanics and features.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, there are extensive tutorials to take advantage of.  However, they won&#8217;t dig deep into every aspect.  Instead, they offer a basic introduction to the game and the different functions.  The consultants also offer advice throughout the campaign.<\/p>\n<p>However, players are left to discover much of the intricacies for themselves rather than telling how to do it all.  The rest of the gameplay is pretty much the standard fare from previous Total War games.<\/p>\n<p>The only important additions are the restrictions on unit types for some generals and the management of food production.  Overall, the basics of the gameplay work well and run smoothly.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649885787_587_Total-War-Three-Kingdoms-review.jpg\" alt=\"Game |  Total War: Three Kingdoms Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3373\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentation <\/h2>\n<p>Total War games have always been good at integrating the overall theme into UI menus.  It&#8217;s not an extremely important part of the presentation, but it does so much to immerse you in the overall experience.  The vibrant colors and intricate artwork make you feel involved in the Chinese setting.<\/p>\n<p>Another great example of this is the world map.  No matter how close you zoom in, the map remains a beautiful and impressive sight.  Seeing the various natural structures in all their splendor in the various environments is a pleasure.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the ability to see characters and units up close is also impressive.  Players can see various individuals and animals going about their daily activities on the map.<\/p>\n<p>While the animations of all the units are great, the zoom to watch the duels of the generals is great.  Every twist, block, and attack looks superb as they struggle to get past their opponent.<\/p>\n<p>The detail of everything in Total War: Three Kingdoms is unmatched in the genre.  Add some great sound effects and a well-rounded soundtrack and you&#8217;ll struggle to find a better presented strategy game on the market.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict <\/h2>\n<p>Total War: Three Kingdoms is arguably the best Creative Assembly title to date.  Not only that, but it could also be the best strategy game of the last decade.  It comes close to perfection in almost every way and only a few little hiccups are what is holding it back.<\/p>\n<p>It manages to finely balance complex tactical warfare with a deep and satisfying character-based campaign.  This is what makes the game suitable for old and new players.<\/p>\n<p>Three Kingdoms offers a great way to enter the series for the first time.
