Half-Life 2 carries on the narrative thread of the first game, making it perfect for hardcore fans.  In this first-person shooter, you play the protagonist Gordon Freeman, who wakes up from stasis after 20 years and must fight the evil alien Combine who has conquered Earth.<\/p>\n<p>Even though Half-Life 2 is over 15 years old, it remains relevant and useful today.  Named &#8220;Game of the Decade&#8221; by Spike TV in 2012, that&#8217;s why Half-Life 2 is still worth your time.<\/p><div id=\"forum-1566324582\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Half-Life-2-review.jpg\" alt=\"Half-Life 2 Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3133\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Really cinematic<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing I have to say about Half-Life 2 is that it&#8217;s a beautiful game.<\/p>\n<p>When you imagine launching a 2004 game, you might think you&#8217;ll find yourself wading through a bunch of ugly, low-resolution storylines.  However, this game looks absolutely fantastic and even the simplest modern PCs will keep it running smooth as butter.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2798752703\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Much of this beauty comes from how cinematic it is.  The game makes great use of light and shadow, and you will be forgiven for thinking that some of these things are good enough to be a cutscene.<\/p>\n<p>However, the game contains no cutscenes &#8211; everything uses the game engine and you look at it from your character&#8217;s point of view.<\/p><div id=\"forum-890467447\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The end result is a game of breathtaking beauty, even when it is absolutely terrifying.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Imperfect future<\/h2>\n<p>One thing that may seem refreshing to modern gamers is the setting.  Notably, this game takes place in a future dystopia that is different from most games.<\/p>\n<p>For example, many &#8220;dark future&#8221; games envision something more apocalyptic.  For example, games like 2016&#8217;s Doom assume you&#8217;re a man stuck in a world that has gone (quite literally) to hell.<\/p>\n<p>By contrast, Half-Life 2 is more of a classic sci-fi dystopia.  You&#8217;re not alone at all &#8211; you live in a world filled with allies like Alyx and countless other humans who may or may not be good guys.  And that makes the dystopia more like an Orwellian nightmare: those in power are already evil and compromised, and those who discover it don&#8217;t always know what to do.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a matter of taste, but I find this kind of &#8220;one man against the world&#8221; narrative far more compelling than a game where you shoot one after another at mindless villains.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649890268_650_Half-Life-2-review.jpg\" alt=\"Half-Life 2 Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3132\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>A thinker and a shooter<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking of filming, you do a lot of it in Half-Life 2. Fortunately, that&#8217;s not all you do!<\/p>\n<p>This game is basically a thinking person&#8217;s shooter.  I say this because it is full of puzzles where you have to use your head between combat rounds where you have to rely on your quick reflexes.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>In some cases, the combat is also more cerebral than you might expect.  A basic understanding of physics can help with puzzles and fighting alike.  And such knowledge will give you a leap forward to success if you ever play Portal, a game based on this same engine.<\/p>\n<h2>A seamless world<\/h2>\n<p>One of my favorite aspects of this game is that it looks great and often seamless.  Many shooters of this era feel very small &#8211; you fight in a small box of a level, get to the end and then access the next small box of a level.<\/p>\n<p>In Half-Life 2, the levels are large, smooth and seamless.  Places like City 17 look like real places instead of just video game maps.  And this goes a long way in making the game as engaging as possible.<\/p>\n<p>That perfect immersion also applies to small touches like the position of the sun.  Instead of illuminating all levels in exactly the same way, the sun serves as a constant reminder of the passing time.  This increases the realism while making the lighting even more beautiful on various objects, places and characters.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Real characters<\/h2>\n<p>I mentioned this before, but it&#8217;s worth pointing out that this game is full of characters that look very real.<\/p>\n<p>They are not just random NPC allies lazily cast in the narrative.  Instead, characters like Alyx have realistic reactions to everything.  This helps humanize them by adding genuine texture to this universe.<\/p>\n<p>Your character, Gordan Freeman, is a bit more of a clean slate.  However, this is due to the design: like many classic games, the reactions of the main character are kept to a minimum so that you can provide your own.  In this way, each player walks away feeling as if he knows who Gordan Freeman really is.<\/p>\n<p>I should also give props to enemies.  Not only is there a wide variety of enemies, but many of the villains apparently have their own compelling motives for evil.  It may seem simple now, but characters like Dr. Breen who have their own personality and motivation made it seem much more satisfying to defeat them.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649890268_193_Half-Life-2-review.jpg\" alt=\"Half-Life 2 Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-3131\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Different ways to play<\/h2>\n<p>If you are interested in collecting Half-Life 2, you should know that there are more options for doing so.<\/p>\n<p>First, you can always wait for a bundle on Steam.  It is not uncommon for this game to be bundled along with its spin-offs (episodes one and two, respectively).<\/p>\n<p>You can also pick it up as part of the orange box.  This bundle includes Half-Life 2, the two aforementioned episodes, and copies of Portal and Team Fortress 2 (although the latter has now become a free-to-play game).<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Even 15 years later, there aren&#8217;t many other games that combine the shooter and puzzle elements, so Half-Life 2&#8217;s gameplay remains truly unique.  And there are few characters as compelling as Gordan Freeman and his bizarre adventures.<\/p>\n<p>I can only hope that enough new people buying Half-Life 2 means Valve will finally give us Half-Life 3.
