Either an RTS interrupts a large isometric character RPG or the RPG simplifies in-depth strategic combat.  SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest is suffering from an identity crisis.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/SpellForce-3-Soul-Harvest-Review.jpg\" alt=\"SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-2832\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<p>SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest tends to overwhelm at first glance. The tutorial at the start of the game does a good job of introducing the player to the controls and systems, but the game assumes previous experience with both cRPG and RTS games.<\/p>\n<p>The cluttered nightmare UI doesn&#8217;t give any hints as to what important actions the player should remember. Stats, damage types, resistances, abilities, names, places and traditions assault the player from jumping.  Once you have a few hours on your hands, the game feels a little more manageable, but getting to that point requires patience and an open wiki page.<\/p>\n<p>Combat during the RPG sections is like getting behind the wheel of a 747 after reading only the safety booklet.  Enemies prove to be a major threat from the start, quickly killing any group that bites more than it can chew.  The fast pace of combat requires the player to study their spells and hotkeys before battle, otherwise the humble dwarves decimate an unsuspecting group.  Due to the camera perspective and visual style, there is an added difficulty in determining exactly who is attacking who and with what.<\/p>\n<p>Soul Harvest also introduces RTS aspects without much context, assuming RTS experience or knowledge of previous games.  Again, the perspective and realistic visual style doesn&#8217;t do much to emphasize units or actions that are important to the uninitiated.  To be fair, once these mechanics snap, they form a totally repairable RTS.  The steep learning curve makes it difficult to get to that point.  <\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Switching between these two styles of play involves a very distinct whiplash.  Just when the RPG combat starts to freeze or the story gets interesting, the game will start an RTS section.  Just as the player learns to micromanage their units, the game reverts to simpler RPG.  There really isn&#8217;t a sense of cohesion between the two styles of play.  Rather, they feel like two different games that the player switches between.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649905976_186_SpellForce-3-Soul-Harvest-Review.jpg\" alt=\"SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-2833\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Any great RPG needs a good story, and thankfully SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest delivers.  Interesting characters and choices keep the player engaged in the Nortander realm.  The game features a fully voiced narrative campaign, with solid performance that brings the world to life.  The story takes place in classic <em>Dungeons and Dragons<\/em> style, with missions and characters that offer real choices and dilemmas.  <\/p>\n<p>Soul Harvest manages to tell an epic story of kingdoms and wars, while also focusing on the more personal story of the main character.  Disgraced general, your character returns to Nortander after years away from home.  The queen entrusts you with leadership, appointing you as the new head of the army.  From there, the player unravels a storyline involving dwarves, dark elves and the fate of the kingdom.  <\/p>\n<p>The writing, especially in the dialogues, stands out as particularly engaging.  Backed by a large cast of voice actors, the RPG elements work very well.  Missions offer interesting stories and characters to explore.  The dialogue options provide a sense of role play not often found in modern role playing games.  Usually the need to record voiceover limits the possible dialogue and branching options, but Soul Harvest manages to avoid those pitfalls gracefully.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Visual  <\/h2>\n<p>For immersion, a good fantasy world needs a good world design.  SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest stands out for its beautiful environments that transport you to another world.  The lighting and detail found in these maps are stunning.  From lush forests to dwarven mines, the world of SpellForce is beautiful.  Sometimes the intricate details hide important in-game items, but it&#8217;s worth making a compromise.  <\/p>\n<p>Conversely, character models don&#8217;t have the highest fidelity, much less than maps.  Still, the zoomed-in camera hides that flaw quite well.  This allows a large number of units to fit the screen.  Even with full armies, I didn&#8217;t notice a noticeable drop in performance.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649905976_933_SpellForce-3-Soul-Harvest-Review.jpg\" alt=\"SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-2834\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Final verdict<br \/>\n<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a fan of cRPG and RTS games, the odd pairing of peanut butter and anchovies that is SpellForce 3: Soul Harvest might be for you.<\/p>\n<p>For me, the experience was a bit jarring.  I would have preferred one genre or another to take the spotlight rather than collide.<\/p>\n<p>If you can get through the gameplay whiplash, there is a treasure to be found.  A solid story full of interesting characters propels the campaign, with great voice acting to complete the package.
