But this is not the case and today more than ever it is essential to combine condemnation or criticism with the analysis of concrete data. Let’s look at France, which never hurts, where right-wing populism – Marine Le Pen, Éric Zemmour and Nicolas Dupont-Aignan – with its 32.28%, added to that of the left of Jean Luc Mélenchon with 21.95% it won a solid 54.23% of the electorate.

Well, actually badly, if we look at (Ipsos survey) the social composition of this vote, a dissonant element emerges from the indistinct and vociferous image of the populist mob: an impressive 59% of the workers chose Marine Le Pen (36%) o Jean Luc Mélenchon (23%). Only 18% of the workers chose an Emmanuel Macron who also swallowed up a large part of the socialist electorate. Net majority, but narrower than 51% for bipopulism among employees. Again, a very clear majority of 59% for bipopulism among those who earn less than 1,250 euros a month, a little more narrow, 51% among those who earn between 1,250 and 2,000 euros a month.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

Therefore, a social base of bipopulism, right and left, firmly anchored among the weakest social strata, but perfectly inserted in the productive fabric, absolutely not marginalized, descamisados precisely. Productive social layers today mostly pro-populist who, up until the 2017 French elections, recognized themselves in the two great political-ideological families of the French twentieth century: the socialists and the Gaullists.

To better understand this eruption of the affirmation of French populism it is useful to go back to the referendum on the European Constitution of 2005. Popular vote for or against one of the main issues on which French populism is gathering support: the European Union. At that time, mind you, the neo-Gaullists of Chirac and the socialists of Hollande, who had obtained a total of 75.8% in the elections for Parliament three years earlier, were firmly siding for the Yes to the federal process of Europe. Virtually all the major media were also lined up for the Yes. Only Jean Marie Le Pen (11.3%), the communist Robert Hue (4.8%) and some, but isolated, ministers of the socialist area (Laurent Fabius, Christane Taubira, Jean Luc Mélenchon, Jean Pierre Chevènement).

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

Despite the massive line-up for the Yes by the overwhelming majority of the establishment, the No triumphed with a stark 54.67%. But what is more interesting is that for the rejection of Europe, which will be the backbone of French populism, the impressive 79% of the workers, 70% of the farmers, 67% of the office workers and 57% of the middle classes voted for the rejection of Europe. . On the other hand, the leading cadres voted 65% for Yes.

All this not to play with the percentages and statistics, but to highlight a problem, which is also of an Italy in which 40% of the members of the CGIL voted for Matteo Salvini or Beppe Grillo. The problem is that of a political proposal of the left, the Democratic Party in Italy, as in the center, Macron in France, which leaves completely uncovered, unlike what happened in the last century, the demand for representation of a large part of the workers, of the employees, of the productive classes, of those who earn under two thousand euros, etc. Left and right populism fill this void.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

The picture of the success of populism in a Poland and a Hungary in which the electoral victories of PiS and Viktor Orbán are based on the strong response in the great province and in the urban peripheries of those countries is different, obviously, but not dissimilar in its fundamentals, opposed to the minority of a moderate-progressive front limited to the central nucleus of the – few – large cities. Exemplary, but little remembered, is the fact that Solidarnosc today fully recognizes itself in the populist government of the PiS.

So, something much more complex than Michele Serra’s excellent boutade: “P.the more they live in the center, the more they vote on the left“.

In reality, there is a very deep crisis, even in the absence, of a contemporary political and participatory reformism, but also an economic one, anchored to a productive and broad social base. The feeling, the certainty of not being represented in the government of the nation today involves not only the marginalized, but precisely the productive classes, the workers, the employees, the small VAT numbers and, in Italy, the small entrepreneurs themselves. This, in the face of a political over-representation of unproductive classes and above all of the imperious needs of a finance that grows on itself and determines the choices of governments.

This is the Achilles heel of Emmanuel Macron himself, somatically and from the body language incurably a Grand Commis de l’État, so well defined by Jerome Fenoglio, director of Le Monde: “He did not activate participation mechanisms, he did not modernize society, as his model, Giscard d’Estaing, had succeeded.
