The Twitter owner announced that the platform will charge $ 8 per month for users to get a blue verification check mark, essentially voiding the meaning of the feature. Now, to save face, social media is adding a second gray tick for all accounts that are actually verified to be credible and represent a real person or organization.<\/p>\n

As of this writing, media such as The New York Times and The Verge have the gray tick, while Elon Musk, the new Twitter owner and current CEO, is missing one.<\/p>\n

Esther Crawford, currently vice president of Twitter and head of the Blue subscription project, confirmed in a tweet that the “official” label will be used to distinguish between subscribers and actual verified accounts. Any accounts that had the blue check before today will not automatically receive the new label, she added in a later tweet, and the official label is not for sale.<\/p>\n

According to the vice president, “the accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media, publishers and some public figures.” The company will continue to experiment with ways to differentiate account types, which means this solution is likely not final.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
