Fantastic titles like Dust: An Elysian Tail and Cave Story + had shown the world what the genre could produce.  Even then, however, something was missing.  Someone had to step forward and show the pinnacle of Metroidvania gameplay.  This is where Ori developer Moon Studios stepped in.  With gorgeous graphics, a beautiful soundtrack, and a heartwarming storyline, Ori and the Blind Forest has reached the pinnacle.<\/p>\n<h2>Visual<\/h2>\n<p>You might expect the best video games to come from huge AAA developers.  After all, they spend millions of dollars on their colossal development projects.  However, this is not the case.  The visual appeal in video games really blossoms when an artist is given absolute freedom.  Ori and the Blind Forest is a spectacular example of this. Serene green meadows, sparkling blue lakes and pools of viscous red magma.  It would have been easy to take Ori&#8217;s theme of darkness and create gloomy and moody environments.  Moon Studios shunned this and instead made something that looks beautiful and only gets better as you play.  Bringing life back to the forest adds layer by layer of fresh and breathtaking color.<\/p>\n<h2>Audio<\/h2>\n<p>Composer Gareth Coker is responsible for Ori&#8217;s well crafted score.  The songs make the most of their powerful and emotional piano segments.  Highlights include &#8220;Ori, Lost In The Storm&#8221; and &#8220;Naru, Embracing the Light&#8221;.  Songs from different genres blend well throughout the game. The storyline involves Ori, a Guardian Spirit whose main goal is to collect three Elements of Light.  These lights will restore balance in the Nibel forest.  Most of your adventure is to collect the light of water, wind and heat.  Collect skills, revisit old areas, upgrade your stats, and eventually make your way to the final boss.  Very standard Metroidvania gameplay.<\/p>\n<p>The only unique mechanic is the soul connection.  Using some of your energy, which is Ori&#8217;s mana system, you can create checkpoints.  These soul links allow you to save and use skill points to acquire new skills.  At higher difficulties, this becomes interesting as the energy is limited.  It is used to open mandatory gateways, so you can&#8217;t afford to waste it on soul connections carelessly.  With Ori&#8217;s resource management, you need to use them wisely to make good progress. Ori and the Blind Forest makes a conscious effort to be as accessible as possible.  The easy difficulty will allow most people to scroll through the story with relatively little effort.  Some platforming sections may still be somewhat technical, but you have access to a lot of soul links.  You are free to explore Ori at your own pace.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>At around seven hours of gameplay, Ori and the Blind Forest suffers from content depth issues.  Everything there is of the highest quality, but it can seem a little short for its retail price ($ 19.99 on Steam).  The ability to reproduce is present but only for those who are already in love with Ori.  Consumers who just want to collect it for a single playthrough may feel suppressed.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>PC performance<\/h2>\n<p>The Xbox One version of Ori and the Blind Forest has some performance issues.  In such a beautiful game, it seems nothing short of a tragedy.  Thankfully, the PC port is gorgeous.  As this is a mostly 2D platformer from 2015, it&#8217;s not that demanding.  My 1060 GTX easily maintained 144 FPS, 1080p with no noticeable dips throughout the entire playthrough.<\/p>\n<p>Oddly enough, the original Ori and the Blind Forest supported unlimited framerates.  The Definitive Edition, however, appears to have a limit to the framerates supported by V-Sync.  Of course, playing at 60 or 144 FPS isn&#8217;t a big deal, but it&#8217;s something to consider.<\/p>\n<p>Those with less than 8GB of RAM should be aware that this can become surprisingly RAM-intensive in some areas.  Probably due to the superb fidelity of its 3D visuals, RAM spike is not uncommon.  At lower settings, however, only 4GB of RAM is enough to sustain a playable experience.<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the PC version is the best option.  But Ori and the Blind Forest is the kind of game you should try regardless of platform.  A native port for Nintendo Switch is expected soon.  Those looking for an alternative portable version of Ori will probably be better off waiting for it.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1649982079_927_Ori-and-the-Blind-Forest-Review.png\" alt=\"Ori and the Blind Forest Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-2865\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>As a reviewer, you work your way through some terrible games.  From time to time, you get the chance to play something that really blows you away.  A game where mediocrity was expected, but it turns out that you have played something special.  Ori and the Blind Forest is that game.  Calling it Metroidvania almost seems like a disservice, as Ori is arguably superior to both Metroid and Castlevania.<\/p>\n<p>Ori&#8217;s cutting-edge graphics, coupled with challenging puzzle segments, make for a consistently joyful gaming experience.  The thrilling OST and elegant platforming combine to create one of the best games of the decade.  When people talk about Microsoft exclusives, they no doubt mention Halo, Forza, and Gears of War.  Though perhaps more ambitious in size, all of these fail to reach Ori&#8217;s jaw-dropping artistic heights.
