Super Mario 3D World from 2013<em> <\/em>it was Nintendo&#8217;s attempt to relieve some of this pressure by resorting to its most iconic mascot.<\/p>\n<p>While the game&#8217;s impact on rescuing his drowning console can be examined, there&#8217;s no question that Super Mario 3D World<em> <\/em>it&#8217;s a blast in its own right. Nintendo had already tried this design approach in 2011&#8217;s Super Mario 3D Land<em> <\/em>on Nintendo 3DS.  Here, however, more creative freedom is given thanks to the myriad of captivating mechanics that are used to their full potential by the developers.<\/p><div id=\"forum-207669404\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>I found myself joyfully waiting for the surprises that each new stadium had to show me.  I marveled at the visually striking act of using shadows to frame the layer layout.  And I loved zooming down on the slides and speed pads in a Mario Kart-style run up to the flag pole.<\/p>\n<p>It was admirable how rarely did the game choose to fall back on established ideas. It manages to strike the perfect balance between being accessible to new players and respectful to veterans of the series.  Each level acts as its own standalone gameplay vignettes that will guide you through an evolving central idea.  As you play, you will learn to understand, test, experiment, and ultimately master whatever interesting mechanics are on display for that stage.<\/p>\n<p>I was also impressed with the layers of secrets and hidden interactivity that most of the levels contained.  The vertical crossing that opens the cat suit was particularly inspired.  I used it to climb any wall I could dig into with my claws.  Topping it all off are a handful of Captain Toad puzzle missions that have ended up spawning their own spin-off game.  As such, the level design in Super Mario 3D World remains among the purest and most dynamic in the series.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650022199_724_Super-Mario-3D-world-review.png\" alt=\"Super Mario 3D World Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1783\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Playable characters<\/h2>\n<p>The beautifully designed levels are only as good as the characters you can play them with.  Thankfully, Super Mario 3D World<em> <\/em>offers several possible ways to jump, trample and climb these worlds.  Mario plays with the same elegance since he first faced Bowser on NES, with an emphasis on precision encoded in his physics and mobility.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, ghost catcher Luigi has an exaggerated jumping height and feels designed to appeal to those who find his big brother&#8217;s role a little too safe.  Peach&#8217;s glide ability will appeal to players who have a habit of overcoming or exceeding their own jumps.  And as a result, Toad&#8217;s sporadic speed is sure to create some overtime falls in bottomless pits.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Multiplayer<\/h2>\n<p>As fun as it was to play with each character, the real fun behind them is bringing up to four friends to enjoy the ride with you.<\/p>\n<p>The additional space offered by these 3D levels allows multiplayer to thrive in a Mario platform game like never before.  It was great trying to navigate the controlled chaos with some friends.  And the emotions we felt throughout the game ranged from euphoric success to maddening failure.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, it is never fully cooperative and it is never fully competitive.  I can say with certainty that &#8220;team up&#8221; with friends in Super Mario 3D World<em> <\/em>it never produces a dull moment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650022200_830_Super-Mario-3D-world-review.png\" alt=\"Super Mario 3D World Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1784\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentation  <\/h2>\n<p>Nintendo injects Super Mario 3D World<em> <\/em>with a playful charm that permeates images and audio.  The glossy art style helps characters and objects jump off the screen.  The best thing is that I have never lost track of my character even in the midst of madness.<\/p>\n<p>I wish a little more effort had been put into rendering the backgrounds.  Often they are satisfied with bland and confused plots that repeat themselves in immensity.  Likewise, Nintendo can take the minimalism of some ground and wall textures a little too far.  This results in a flatness that seems at odds with the expressive characters and level obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, the soundtrack maintains a sense of bouncy fun that complements the game&#8217;s lighter tone.  Specifically, I hummed Bowser&#8217;s main theme and Las Vegas-style theme for days after I finished playing.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Super Mario 3D World isn&#8217;t the most groundbreaking or experimental Mario game ever released, but it does show a respect for the series&#8217; platforming roots and executes the potential of Mario multiplayer in a way that few games can match.  Certain levels will stay with me for some time thanks to their memorable creativity.<\/p>\n<p>I will definitely get my Wii U back whenever I have a group of friends willing to help me save those fairies.  And maybe throw each other off the cliffs.  Or Nintendo could bring it to the Switch.
