He focuses solely on capturing the feeling of sitting in the cockpit.  Its developer Kunos Simulations has been creating sim racer since 2006 netKar Pro. So, the Italian studio knows a thing or two about this challenging genre.  Driving games are a niche genre, and this is further amplified when the word &#8220;simulator&#8221; is added.  Released in 2014, Assetto Corsa is probably the company&#8217;s most accomplished project.  But is it worth a look?<\/p>\n<h2>Be the driver<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes exclusively to the act of driving, Assetto Corsa is the best racing simulator on the market.  Shipped with a respectable range of cars and just under 20 tracks, Assetto Corsa focuses on quantity rather than quality in the areas that really matter. Memorizing a map layout is critical to resisting any hope of getting a podium.  You cannot learn Assetto Corsa tracks on the fly.  You have to prepare yourself to spend a significant amount of hours driving alone in practice mode.  Once you are familiar with it, you can switch to Career mode.  However, it may be more rewarding to opt for a single race.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Assetto-Corsa-review.png\" alt=\"Assetto Corsa Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1407\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Align<\/h2>\n<p>While there is an impressive collection of vehicles, players shouldn&#8217;t just switch between cars. Along with vehicles designed specifically for one type of race (Supra MKIV Drift), each genre contains a handful of cars intended to familiarize beginners with the controls.  For example, 2 Eleven is a great starting option.  Beginners should completely ignore supercars until much later.  Deciphering which cars are prone to understeer or have poor traction becomes vital.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Visual<\/h2>\n<p>Although Assetto Corsa is not a graphic powerhouse, the cars are still universally striking, which extends to the detailed view of the cockpit.  As a sim, the purpose of the experience is to give users as much control as possible. For a title that seeks to celebrate the art of racing, the campaign offers little in the way of fanfare.  Along with the standard races that allow up to 15 AI opponents, Assetto Corsa&#8217;s career mainly offers drifting, dragging and time trials.  Putting practice mode aside, players will spend their time mostly in Career, Special Events, or multiplayer.<\/p>\n<p>Over the span of at least 30 hours, Career is underwhelming.  If forced to find a positive, the campaign manages to gradually bring users closer to the most challenging vehicles.  Unfortunately, this is literally the only sense of progression found in this one-mode slog.  It feels closer to a fast-paced streak than an interconnected campaign.  Once you complete a race, the results appear on the screen unceremoniously before sending you back to the menu.  The game modes seem like an afterthought in Assetto Corsa.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Special events<\/h2>\n<p>Despite offering more or less the same, the special events are a slight improvement because the user can decide the order to take on any available races.  It&#8217;s nothing serious, but this difference makes Special Events feel less indifferent to Career.<\/p>\n<p>AI is also a mixed bag, mainly because opponents seem to operate in a much more forgiving universe.  Even at the lowest difficulty, a single mistake is enough to guarantee a lower goal, especially if the excessively punitive penalty system of Assetto Corsa is activated.  By contrast, AI&#8217;s mechanical driving is a frustrating match for realistic user-imposed controls.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650047418_513_Assetto-Corsa-review.png\" alt=\"Assetto Corsa Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1409\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>If playing on PC, multiplayer is fine but obviously has a pretty high barrier to entry.  Learning to drive with other users takes time and effort, as there are various rules that must be followed to ensure a fair match.  There are multiple servers dedicated to different classes and it is generally recommended to use a steering wheel.  Unfortunately, finding a match online on consoles is far from an easy task.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Assetto Corsa does not seek to be welcoming or even fun, giving priority to realism above all else.  Kunos Simulations has undeniably created a stellar simulation experience.  Consequently, you should only consider Assetto Corsa if you are looking for a gaming experience outside the traditionally satisfying racers.
