This is exactly what mode 7 games did with Frozen Synapse. <\/p>\n<p>Frozen Synapse is a weird title to define.  It works similar to XCOM titles, but it also has strategic shooter elements, with futuristic sci-fi imagery like <em>Tron<\/em>. A huge corporation now runs the government and the country, abusing its power in every aspect of society.  With the general population suffering at the hands of this dominant force, a resistance movement has risen to challenge its authority.  Players take on the role of a tactical commander who is in charge of one of these resistance groups, with the goal of fighting government forces.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Frozen-Synapse-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Frozen Synapse Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1615\"><\/figure>\n<p>This story sounds pretty standard for a sci-fi setting, but the storyline is definitely not meant to carry the game.  Rather, it is a container for the different scenarios that make up the singleplayer experience. There are 55 different scenarios and each one has some element of procedural generation.  This could mean anything from the random nature, to how units are positioned on a level, to where and what extra objectives there are.  So, playing it multiple times is never the same, giving the game some replay value.  <\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Multiplayer<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the generous single-player campaign, which is expected to run around 15 hours, Frozen Synapse has a variety of offerings.  A skirmish mode allows for quick battles, while a game editor allows you to design your own scenarios and maps.  However, the most important of all is the multiplayer.  There is a selection of game modes available, but what&#8217;s so impressive is how well match-making works.  <\/p><div id=\"forum-3025333112\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>You can start the title and be in a match against another human player in seconds.  Mode 7 Games has thought carefully about making multiplayer work.  After all, in a match like this, matches can last a long time.  With multiplayer games that can be played simultaneously, it never feels like you&#8217;re waiting until the next round.  You can simply switch to another opponent until that turn is resolved.  It&#8217;s an effective system that ensures you never get too frustrated waiting.   <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650063865_587_Frozen-Synapse-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Frozen Synapse Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1618\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Fight<\/h2>\n<p>In its simplest form, Frozen Synapse is a turn-based tactics game that sees players having to control their team through tight office spaces to take out all enemies in the area.  The complexity comes when you start planning how you want to tackle each turn.  Every action for any particular unit can be micromanaged, so you decide not only where they need to move, but also how they should behave.  <\/p>\n<p>Going into all these details is necessary if you want to be successful.  Anything else will result in total failure almost immediately.  You can handle pretty much everything a unit could do, from the direction it aims to the path it will follow to its final destination.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Every aspect is important as they all have consequences.  A unit stopped and in cover will be victorious if it encounters a moving target.  Aiming in the right direction at possible threats allows that unit to fire quickly and not have to react and waste precious time.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Tactics<\/h2>\n<p>Your careful planning must also take into account the type of unit and any effects to which it lies, things that can significantly alter the way things play out.  Once you have decided on your choices, you can try them out.  Frozen Synapse even lets you map how you think the enemy might move to see how your tactics stack up.  Eventually, though, you&#8217;ll have to prepare for a breakthrough and watch your resolved decisions in real time.  <\/p>\n<p>The results are often devastating.  Despite all the thought, attention and tactical know-how, you will no doubt miss an obvious move from your enemy.  Due to the narrow confines of the play area and the limited number of units, any mistake is often catastrophic.  However, these mistakes don&#8217;t seem unfair.  Rather, they act as lessons to be learned.  <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650063865_598_Frozen-Synapse-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Frozen Synapse Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1619\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Presentation<\/h2>\n<p>Thankfully, things never get too confusing thanks to a clever visual appearance.  Not only do the graphics fit well with the theme and setting, but they also provide a clean and efficient way to lay out the battlefield.  Having too many visual elements or different textures could have been confusing.  This style allows the player to fully focus on the gameplay while still maintaining a good look.<\/p>\n<p>Especially in terms of presentation there is the soundtrack.  This beautiful score is worth listening to outside of the game.  It&#8217;s relaxing and suspenseful all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of these positives, there are some technical problems.  The game can crash quite often and you notice more frequent problems than you would expect.  In my opinion, these aren&#8217;t big enough problems to detract from the overall experience.  <\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Ultimately, Frozen Synapse is a game that rewards you for investing time in it.  After suffering numerous setbacks and making tactical mistakes, you begin to be able to plan ahead more effectively.  Like chess, this game requires you to think about general strategy and short-term tactics.<\/p>\n<p>Once you get to that level, it becomes a much more satisfying experience as you pit your wits against others.  There are few titles that place so much emphasis on this type of thoughtful gameplay.
