Little Nightmares is one of those projects.  Combining various different styles, Tarsier Studios has created a beautiful platformer, full of puzzles and imbued with grotesque imagery.<\/p>\n<p>Horror is a niche genre that tends to focus on promoting a tense atmosphere during gameplay.  Puzzle platformers are typically the exact opposite.  Consequently, few of the former engage in the latter.  This makes Little Nightmares incredibly unique, but is it a great game? <\/p><div id=\"forum-2809273223\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Divided into five chapters, Little Nightmares centers on a hungry young girl named Six, who tries to escape from a strange prison run by as yet unknown people.  Little Nightmares can evoke memories of Studio Ghibli&#8217;s phenomenal <em>Spirited Away<\/em>, even if the tones and premises differ.  Both properties blend the fantastic with a hint of reality to create an almost dreamlike state of wonder.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Small-nightmares-review.png\" alt=\"Little Nightmares Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-1934\"><\/figure>\n<p>Little Nightmares&#8217; story mostly takes a back seat in support of the game&#8217;s surreal tone, but Six&#8217;s journey produces truly intense and traumatic moments.  Chapter 4 is particularly effective, at least as far as the horror aspect is concerned.<\/p><div id=\"forum-4115690493\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>In fact, Little Nightmares works best as a pure horror game.  In truth, adventure isn&#8217;t conventionally scary.  Due to its 2.5D platforming nature, Little Nightmares cannot quite replicate the level of immersion found in games like Resident Evil 7 or Dead Space.  That said, Little Nightmares is relentlessly intense.  There is rarely a time when Six feels safe.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Opponents<\/h2>\n<p>Each given chapter sees Six traverse a series of rooms to try to escape the Maw, a ship that satisfies the cannibalistic tendency of a vile subsect of humanity.  Setting aside thirteen friendly creatures known as Nomes, who unwittingly produce the darkest moment of the narrative, Six stumbles upon a series of adversaries working or visiting the Maw.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2188376595\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Each chapter focuses on a particular enemy that Six can sneak out on the route to escape the ship, be it a janitor or twin chefs.  Tarsier Studios deserves credit for creating multiple unique and consistently nightmare opponents to ensure the player struggles to get a good night&#8217;s sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>Positions<\/h2>\n<p>The locations are pretty impressive and shake things up with each new chapter.  Little Nightmares levels maintain some degree of thematic consistency while still managing to offer enough diversity to stave off boredom.  Considering that the campaign shouldn&#8217;t have taken more than four hours to complete, any repetition would certainly have been unacceptable.  While there are a handful of collectibles, Little Nightmares lacks a lot in the way of replayability, with a return trip focusing mostly on a handful of decent (and paid) DLC levels.<\/p>\n<p><center class=\"native_ad\"><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite Start --><\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- Composite End --><br \/>\n<\/center><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650154595_356_Small-nightmares-review.png\" alt=\"Little Nightmares Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-839\"  ><\/figure>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>Visual<\/h2>\n<p>Visually, Little Nightmares is packed with detail and atmosphere.  Whether it&#8217;s a dusty library or a disgusting kitchen, layers upon layers of data fill the screen.  Most of the visuals could also be painted, although Six can interact with a few chosen objects or climb up occasional walls or tables.  The dense sound design further increases the visual impact, allowing the Maw to truly feel like it&#8217;s a living place. <\/p>\n<h2>Game<\/h2>\n<p>Seen as a platformer or puzzle game, Little Nightmares falls short.  To be clear, the gameplay is far from terrible.  However, it&#8217;s not great either.  Along with standard running, crawling, climbing, and jumping, Six has access to a lighter and can lift certain objects to complete puzzles. <\/p>\n<p>Most of the rooms only require the protagonist to jump over a few boxes to reach a crawl space, but there are a few that test the player&#8217;s critical thinking skills.  Sure, most of these come down to creating a distraction to lure the enemy away from the area Six actually needs to enter.  Since rooms can usually only be completed using a single method, puzzles rely on trial and error more than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>While the puzzles will not challenge anyone with a minimum of experience in this type of game, the short duration of the campaign allows these moments to remain interesting until the end. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Small-nightmares-review.jpg\" alt=\"Little Nightmares Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-834\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Little Nightmares is a great horror title, a decent puzzle game, and a slightly below average platformer.  Do not allow anything too strenuous is involved, you are in control well enough not to be too big a nuance.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, things start to crumble every time a real platform is involved.  As a result of the 2.5D perspective, a scenario will eventually pass when a jump is missed due to the camera angle.  Rather than the terrifying creatures of Maw, Six&#8217;s greatest enemy is the lack of depth perception.  The platforming sections are likely to produce some frustrating deaths.  There is nothing funny about accidentally plunging a frightened girl into a bottomless pit.  This problem is compounded by an infrequent checkpoint system.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a horror fan, Little Nightmares should be considered a must-play game.  While it will never win any awards, the gameplay is useful and doesn&#8217;t detract from the overall experience.
