Released in 2012, Age of Wushu attempts to deviate from the standard MMORPG formula, particularly when it comes to combat and progression systems.  Seven years after its debut, Age of Wushu remains a fascinating experience with a small, albeit devoted, fan base.  However, it is too late to enroll in a martial arts school and float in the sky like <em>Bent tiger. Hidden dragon<\/em>?<\/p>\n<p>Despite the reputation of being time-wasting, MMORPGs tend to be instantly accessible.  After a brief introduction and tutorial, users quickly find themselves battling enemies and accumulating experience.  With more than a hundred entries in the genre, most try to reward newcomers quickly in hopes of capturing their interest.  Age of Wushu takes a different approach. Fortunately, Snail&#8217;s MMORPG boasts one of the most fully realized sandboxes in the genre. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"559\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/Wushu-Age-Review.jpg\" alt=\"Wushu Age Review |  Gammick\" class=\"wp-image-558\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Visual<\/h2>\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the graphics show the age of the game.  The textures appear quite muddy and the larger structures resemble cardboard cutouts when viewed from a distance, though things improve noticeably up close.  Age of Wushu excels in its thematic consistency, with every aspect of the world reflecting the game&#8217;s Wuxia-inspired origins. Age of Wushu offers PvE and PvP, with the latter shining the most during the endgame.  Once the program is installed and launched, players join one of eight factions.  Each class specializes in a different form of Martial Arts.  Each form is considered &#8220;Good&#8221;, &#8220;Neutral&#8221; or &#8220;Bad&#8221;.  Regardless of choice, each school teaches six in-house skills and five martial arts skill sets, with the latter comprising seven skills tailored to distinct weapon types. <\/p>\n<p>Internal skills serve as a way to boost a character&#8217;s base stats, while martial arts skill sets unlock new offensive or passive skills.  Leaving one school for another is possible, but mastering all eight classes is a full-time job.  Depending on the spirituality of the School, one can subsequently join Reclusive Factions.  These groups open up even more internal skills and martial arts skill sets. Rather than a reward for defeating random enemies, you earn XP by immersing yourself in the world.  Accumulated XP transforms into cultivation points that you can invest in a specific skill, although newcomers should primarily focus on developing their school&#8217;s internal skills.<\/p>\n<p>While this eliminates the need to grind forage enemies, growing it is a rather lengthy undertaking.  While there are ways to accelerate this process, finding nine other players to conduct team training is easier said than done in the current state of play.  Thematically, it makes sense for a character to develop their craft through dedication and hard work.  However, for the player, this translates into staring at an indicator that gradually fills up.  Unless you purchase the VIP pass to allow offline cultivation, be prepared to leave the program running overnight.  Otherwise, your character will stagnate.<\/p>\n<p><!--nextpage--><\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>Depending on the chosen class, Age of Wushu takes players on one of four unique quest lines.  Putting aside a couple of tidy side missions involving spying from other schools, the primary missions are undermined by a disappointing presentation.  The cutscenes are filled with barely moving characters.  Conversations typically require clicking on the NPC repeatedly following a single line of dialogue.  While some quest lines have potential, Age of Wushu&#8217;s shoddy execution makes the adventure feel a bit amateurish.<\/p>\n<p>Once the 30-hour storyline is over, PvP becomes the main reason to play.  Age of Wushu&#8217;s Jianghu system allows you to create various types of relationships between the player base or with NPCs.  PvP is a huge part of the experience and fights can occur at any time between members of opposing factions. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"541\" src=\"https:\/\/forum.sbenny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1650213085_4_Wushu-Age-Review.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-559\"  ><\/figure>\n<h2>Fight<\/h2>\n<p>Fun PvP is impossible without engaging in combat, and Age of Wushu is a step above the competition.  Instead of spamming the strongest attack and waiting for it to cool down, Age of Wushu uses a rock-paper-scissors system that challenges players to constantly pay attention to the opponent&#8217;s actions to achieve victory.  Color-coded for your convenience, the skills are divided into blatant, block, and feint attacks.  If the enemy chooses to block, a feint will break his resistance.  However, feints are no match for a powerful punch in the face.  Thankfully, you can parry such attacks by activating a specialized ability or right-clicking. <\/p>\n<p>While the game occasionally ignores the controls and animations can be quite shaky, the combat in Age of Wushu is still inherently fun, allowing someone to put in the effort to master the mechanics.  Honestly, the same thing extends to the rest of the game.<\/p>\n<h2>Final verdict<\/h2>\n<p>Age of Wushu isn&#8217;t for everyone and takes a lot from its player base.  Are you looking for an MMORPG that gives you a way to let off steam?  Age of Wushu is not for you.
