The company has been one of the most successful companies in marketing AR glasses, reaching 100,000 sales in 2022. The company’s Air glasses are therefore a rather popular product in a growing industry.

Following a trademark dispute with Epic Games, Nreal rebranded to XREAL and has since expanded its portfolio, launching the Beam accessory that extends the functionality of the Air glasses and now a new pair of Air models: Air 2 and Air 2 Pro. The two models are actually nearly identical, except for the Pro’s sleek electrochromic dimming.

After spending some time with the new XREAL Air 2 glasses, we’re now ready to share our findings. Compared to the original XREAL Air glasses, the second generation brings some ergonomic improvements and is lighter overall. They have new, more compact displays that offer the same visual experience and greater brightness. There’s also a new speaker setup and a new sound system.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="inline-image" src="https://forum.sbenny.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1699331783_522_XREAL-Air-2-review.jpg" width="1200" height="799" alt="Left: Air 2 • Right: Air“>
Left: Air 2 • Right: Air

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

First, we should probably clarify the terminology a bit and explain what the XREAL Air 2 glasses actually do. You may find them marketed as XR glasses, which stands for Extended Reality and is actually an umbrella term that encompasses all VR (virtual reality) products. , AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality). The definitions start to get a little fuzzy beyond that, but at its core, the XREAL Air 2 is more or less a portable, wearable display. There is no real computer on board, but there are some sensors, including an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a magnetometer and a proximity sensor. XREAL actually leverages these to provide head tracking when paired with XREAL Beam or the Nebula companion app. So, technically, Air glasses have all the prerequisites to be considered an AR product.

XREAL Air 2 at a glance:

Dimensions: 148mm x 51.4mm x 161mm (unfolded), 148mm x 51.4mm x 56.4mm (folded), 72 grams (without Type-C cable attached, the included cable weighs approximately 31 grams). 3-position vertical gaze angle adjustment fits head sizes from 120 to 186 mm, hinges with 20 degree adjustable angle range.

Optical parameters: Two Micro-OLED displays with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, 46-degree FoV Birdbath optics, up to 120 Hz, 49 PPD (pixels per degree), 8-bit color, 108% sRGB, perceived brightness up to 500 nits, actual size screen size: 130 inches, projected at 4 meters away and up to 201 inches at 6 meters away in MR Space mode.

Audio: Second generation speaker system. The original XREAL Airs are still officially on sale for $339, down from the original $379. Then we have the Air 2 glasses that we are currently reviewing, with an MSRP of $399. And best of all, the XREAL Air 2 Pro costs $449. That’s pretty high for a single feature, but the technical challenges of electrochromic dimming drive up manufacturing costs.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

Here’s a quick comparison between the XREAL Air and Air 2.

AIR XREAL

XREAL Aria 2

148mm x 52mm x 159mm (unfolded), 148mm x 52mm x 60mm (folded)

148mm x 51.4mm x 161mm (unfolded), 148mm x 51.4mm x 56.4mm (folded)

79 grams

72 grams (50:50 weight distribution)

Two 0.68 Micro-OLED displays with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, 46-degree FoV Birdbath optics, up to 120 Hz, 49 PPD (pixels per degree), perceived brightness up to 400 nits

Two 0.55 Micro-OLED displays with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, 46-degree FoV Birdbath optics, up to 120 Hz, 49 PPD (pixels per degree), perceived brightness up to 500 nits

Dual open-ear speakers, two microphones

2nd generation audio system, dual open-ear speakers with two openings each and directional audio that reduces sound dispersion.

Hake

New zero pressure nose pad Ultra soft temples Improved 1:1 weight ratio

Unpacking

The sales packaging of the XREAL Air 2 glasses is very similar to that of the original model. You get the glasses and a fairly long USB Type-C to Type-C braided cable, which gives you the minimum setup required to make the glasses work.

Both fit perfectly in the included travel case, which has seen a redesign. XREAL opted for a more traditional glasses-style zippered hard case instead of the softer, zippered one of the original model. The new case seems very solid, but we are not sure how the locking mechanism will work in the long term.

The Air 2 glasses come with an optional Light Shield accessory that makes the glasses opaque. You also get three different nose pads, so you can find the most comfortable ones. XREAL has put extra effort into user comfort, as evidenced by the included prescription lens frame, which attaches to the back of the XREAL Air 2. Alternatively, companies like Lensology offer made-to-order prescription eyeglass attachments. XREAL also adds a cleaning cloth in the package.

Our unit also came with some great XREAL stickers and something called the “KALEIDO KIT” – a set of blue stickers for the light shield and the glasses themselves. We’re not sure if they’re part of the regular retail package, though.

Hardware, features and controls

Visually, the new XREAL Air 2 glasses don’t deviate much from the design of the original Air. The structure is still made of plastic but seems sturdy enough. The XREAL Air 2 glasses weigh little 72 grams, which is less than the already lightweight original Air, which weighed 79 grams. The plastic construction helps keep the weight down and there really isn’t much hardware inside the glasses. There are two Sony FullHD OLED displays, a pair of speakers and some sensors. There is no battery, processor of any kind, or hardware for wireless connectivity. Content and power are routed through the cable, as is the standard setup for AR glasses these days.

While still quite compact, the Air 2 glasses have grown slightly compared to their predecessors. They measure 148mm x 51.4mm x 56.4mm when folded and 148mm x 51.4mm x 161mm explained. What XREAL did with this generation was actually extend the length of the temples, making the glasses more comfortable for larger head sizes. This will definitely be a personal thing, but this reviewer finds the Air 2 more comfortable overall, particularly with the way the temple tips curve and slope over the ears.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="inline-image" src="https://forum.sbenny.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1699331784_767_XREAL-Air-2-review.jpg" width="1200" height="799" alt="Left: Air • Right: Air 2“>
Left: Air • Right: Air 2

XREAL says so weight distribution has been optimized in the new Air 2 for a 1:1 split along the length of the glasses. In practice, the glasses still feel front-heavy. However, there is some truth to the new weight distribution claims as the Air 2s are more comfortable for extended wear than their predecessors. It takes longer before the pressure on the nose starts to feel uncomfortable. It is also helped by nose padswhich have undergone a redesign and now feature a hollow and rather large internal compartment for extra cushioning.

THE in front of of the XREAL Air 2 glasses are absolutely flat and successfully reproduce a traditional sun look with the lenses flush with the frame. This is in contrast to some alternatives, such as the TCL NXTWEAR S glasses, which have an original front appearance that immediately reveals their “smart” nature.

XREAL has chosen colored lenses on the Air 2, just like the original Air and unlike the aforementioned NXTWEAR S. This means that you can always benefit from integrated light control and thus get a better viewing experience from the displays.

If you prefer to isolate yourself from your surroundings, there is a snap fit with solid shades in retail package. Just like on the original Air glasses, the attachment of this attachment is done through simple friction rather than with fancy elements like clasps or magnets. Even so, the binding is very grippy and is quite secure.

The sunshade attachments make the XREAL Air 2 glasses look a little strange, as if you were wearing completely dark glasses. On the other hand, even in the default state, a closer look is enough to locate the file USB cable hanging from your ear to understand that something strange is going on, so you can’t realistically expect to go into “stealth mode”.

After all, the cable will always be connected to the XREAL Air 2 since it is the only power and video source for the glasses. The braided USB Type-C to Type-C cable that comes in the box is angled on one end to fit over your glasses more comfortably. You can use any decent cable, but the one provided is really great. It is soft and flexible, but at the same time very sturdy without being too thick. We never found it in the way while wearing the glasses.

We appreciate the Type-C connector with its strong physical connection. There is virtually no chance of accidentally ripping the cord from your glasses. However, this also means that if you happen to get snagged, you’ll likely tear your glasses off your face. The magnetic connector of the NXTWEAR S glasses is better in this regard.

As for cable length, we’ve never needed more than what’s provided. It’s long enough to be comfortable while sitting in front of a device or holding it on your lap, and it even reaches into most pants pockets if you really feel like walking around with your glasses, which can be removed.

One notable update on the Air 2 glasses is the speaker system. Just like the original Air, the Air 2 has a pair of conventional speakers (rather than something more exotic like bone conduction), one in each arm. This, however, is the second generation of XREAL audio, which features two vents for upward and downward sound escape and directional audio support that should sound better and reduce audio leakage.

As for sound dispersion, don’t expect miracles. There will always be some, but not enough for those nearby to fully hear the audio.

Quality-wise there is very little bass and the volume is not particularly loud, which may have been a necessary compromise to ensure minimal noise leakage. However, the Air 2 speakers have a wider and richer soundstage overall.

There are two microphones on the Air 2 glasses, just like the original Air.

The buttons have not changed either. The XREAL Air 2 glasses have only one set of controls on the right arm. The rocker adjusts screen brightness with regular presses. You can also adjust the speaker volume by long pressing it. Then there is a power button to turn the glasses on and off and, beyond that, a status LED.

The XREAL Air 2 glasses have an extra cool feature: a wear sensor. It’s positioned in the center of the glasses, right above the nose pads, and is a simple proximity-based unit. It works great: it turns off the glasses a few seconds after taking them off and turns them back on almost instantly once they’re put back on.

Just like the original Air glasses, the new Air 2 model deserves praise overall ergonomics. Having to wear glasses all the time, personally, and having tried several pairs, this reviewer can appreciate when the ergonomics are just right. The hinges on the arm are stiff enough to stay in place but also flexible enough, with enough outward flex, to not crush your head. You get 20 degrees of outward movement from the hinges. The hinges also offer a unique vertical adjustment option: they snap vertically in three steps so you can adjust the viewing angle. You can really dial in the XREAL Air 2 glasses for a comfortable fit and viewing experience.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="inline-image" src="https://forum.sbenny.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1699331785_467_XREAL-Air-2-review.jpg" width="1200" height="799" alt="Left: Air • Right: Air 2“>
Left: Air • Right: Air 2

The tips at the ends of the arms and on all the arms, for that matter, have no sharp edges that could penetrate the skin. The surface of the plastic, while not rubberized, is still soft enough to feel comfortable on the face.

Thanks to a combination of improved weight distribution, slightly longer temples and new nose pads, the Air 2 glasses were noticeably more comfortable to use during extended sessions. Kudos to the XREAL engineering team.

Operating modes and characteristics

The XREAL Air 2 glasses work directly with almost all devices that support DP output via USB Type-C Alt Mode. There is the optional XREAL adapter to extend compatibility and the XREAL Beam to offer some independent operation.

This time we will not discuss XREAL Beam and its features at length. You can read all about it in our original XREAL Air review.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="inline-image" src="https://forum.sbenny.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1699331785_33_XREAL-Air-2-review.jpg" width="1200" height="799" alt="Left: Air • Right: Air 2“>
Left: Air • Right: Air 2

Just like its predecessors, the XREAL Air 2 glasses have a “primary” operating mode. Simply connect them to a source and have a static projected image in front of you (something like 130 inches at a perceived distance of about four meters). The image “follows” the movements of the head, although without any tracking. It simply stays centered in your line of sight.

Then there’s the XREAL Nebula application for Android . You can download it on the Google Play Store only in supported regions, and we actually had to port it locally. By the way, the Nebula app is 1.1GB in size, and we can’t really say how all that storage is justified by the features offered here.

The Nebula app doesn’t have much to look at from a phone perspective. It offers a trackpad for on-display input, along with a Home button, and also takes advantage of the phone’s accelerometer to generate a spatial pointer controller within the Air glasses’ interface.

Nebula Application

Once you launch the app and connect your glasses, you will be able to choose between “AR Space” and “Air Casting”. The latter mirrors the phone’s screen onto the display with an optional “side view” mode that doesn’t stretch the image to its maximum possible size but leaves it in a small window on the left side of the field of view. This is done so that you can see the real world better while still consuming content.

The other option is “AR spaces”. It offers a 3 DoF head tracking experience along with some apps. In particular, a “space” web browser and a YouTube player.

To be fair, not every icon in this interface does anything, and most features that work essentially come down to launching the browser app. The browser, however, is a nice addition, and AR/MR Spaces has another intriguing trick up its sleeve. If you swipe to the far right of the main UI, there’s a feature called “XR Streaming,” which lets you connect the XREAL Air glasses via your phone to a compatible Windows PC running Steam VR and try out some compatible VR apps and Games.

The phone behaves like an emulated VR controller in this mode and it all works surprisingly well. However, we encountered noticeable lag and latency when using it, and there are many limitations that come with 3 DoF tracking and the single controller being emulated instead of two. However, the fact that it works in any capacity is impressive. Additionally, many VR “experiences” of a more passive nature can be enjoyed this way, even if VR games are limited at best. There’s a great article on how to set everything up with XR Streaming here.

One thing that seems to be a painful omission on the XREAL Air 2 glasses, whether through using the Nebula app on a phone or Beam, is the ability to properly play 180-degree SBS video on the glasses with proper tracking. This is an omission that previously existed with the original XREAL Air as well. There is some sort of workaround using VLC on your phone and regular screencasting, but it’s very complicated. We hope that XREAL will provide a suitable player for space video, ideally via both the Nebula and Beam apps and, better yet, one with support for something like DLNA so that the video can be streamed from a home server or NAS.

On the bright side, XREAL, formerly the Nreal community, seems to be very active and new features and first- and third-party apps are popping up all the time, so it might just be a matter of time. However, it’s disappointing that XREAL actually released updated hardware before fixing some of the many issues with its software.

Compatibility and optional adapter

Like the original XREAL Air, device compatibility with the XREAL Air 2 is still confusing. All the glasses really need to work is a USB Type-C port with USB Alt-Mode support for Display Port output. The glasses themselves aren’t too power-hungry, so most devices don’t struggle to keep them powered.

What does this mean in real terms? Let’s start with laptops since they are easier to summarize. If your laptop supports DP Alt mode over USB Type-C, you’re good to go. This should be listed on the laptop’s specifications sheet as these tend to be well detailed. We tested a Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9, a 2021 ASUS Zephyrus G14, and a MacBook Air M1 with perfect success. We know this is a somewhat arbitrary list, but it illustrates the main point: if you have DP over Type-C, it will work.

Things are a little more complicated on the telephone side. Now that the latest generation of iPhones have switched to USB Type-C, the XREAL Air 2 glasses have no problem working with them. So, if you have an iPhone 15, you’re good to go. Technically though, other than that and without additional accessories, the XREAL Air 2 glasses are an Android-only accessory.

Some Android devices support Display Port over USB Type-C, but there’s no easy way to know which ones. A good rule of thumb includes that this is generally a flagship feature and that you should have better odds with Samsung, Huawei, and OnePlus devices. Again, you have to search around to see if your phone has DP over Type-C. As for phones, we managed this with a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Z Fold 4 and an Oppo Find X5 Pro.

Going back to Apple compatibility, XREAL sells something it calls “XREAL adapter”. It basically takes an HDMI signal and converts it to Display Port for glasses. If you purchase it, along with Apple’s official Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter, virtually any recent iPhone and iPad with an AV-compatible Lightning port will also work with the XREAL Air glasses.

The XREAL adapter also comes with a sort of female-to-female HDMI “coupler” that theoretically allows any HDMI source device to “broadcast” to the XREAL Air 2 glasses. XREAL confirms it works with the Microsoft Xbox S/X series, Sony PS4 slim/5 and Nintendo Switch. However, XREAL did not provide us with the adapter. we cannot therefore verify these statements, but we can state with certainty that Nintendo Switch does not work connected directly to the glasses. The Valve Steam Deck, on the other hand, supports DP via its Type-C port and works simply by being plugged directly into your glasses. The same goes for ASUS ROG Ally.

Performance and consumption

The XREAL Air 2 glasses feature brand new Micro OLED displays made by Sony. These are now 0.55 inch in size each, reduced by 21% compared to 0.68 inches of the original XREAL Air glasses. The panels are still FullHD in resolution, in order to obtain a greater pixel density. Despite this change, other visual aspects of the XREAL Air 2 experience remain the same as the original model. For example, the PPD (Pixels per degree) value remains the same 49 PPD despite the increase in pixel density of the display.

Unfortunately, since the displays on the XREAL Air 2 are not mainstream in any way, we cannot accurately measure their performance characteristics. We’ll have to go by some of the official specs here and our subjective impressions. The virtual display turns out to be very well centered in the field of view, which is great. It doesn’t fill it completely, far from it, and there is always a bit of empty space around the display. The official specifications state that a 46 degree field of view, which seems about right. According to the official numbers, XREAL Air can “project” to 130 inches display equivalent to a viewing distance of approx four meters away in normal operating mode. When working in MR Space mode, the size can increase up to 201 inches seen from about six meters away. Subjectively we’d say the image isn’t overwhelming but it’s still great enough to be considered a cinematic experience. As mentioned, the two OLED displays have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. In practice the image is very sharp. Pretty good, even for small texts.

The new displays on the XREAL Air 2 are also a little brighter than their predecessors. The official specifications declare a perceived brightness value equal to 500 nits compared to the original XREAL Air’s 400 nits. Without solid shadows, the brightness is still not enough to drown out the surroundings and “pierce” the transparency. That said, once you get used to the fact that you’ll always see the outside world and focus your attention on the content, even the lowest brightness setting becomes usable. It’s a strange effect that’s hard to put into words. All you need to know is that the XREAL Air remains usable in virtually all circumstances. Higher brightness levels may be fatiguing for some people. After all, the displays are very close to your eyes. The original XREAL Air glasses advertise TUV Rheinland certifications for low blue light emissions and no flickering. While we couldn’t find the same information for the XREAL Air 2 glasses, we hope they have certifications as well.

XREAL Air produces surprisingly vivid and saturated colors. The panels themselves are standard 8 bits. According to the official specifications, the Air 2 glasses have a deltaE 2000 value of less than 3 and are the first XR device to obtain certification of the German Rhine TAV color standard.

Refresh rate It’s a bit of an interesting topic. The original XREAL Air glasses launched with a base refresh rate of 60Hz, overclockable to 72Hz via the Nebula app. In a rather interesting new development, both the original XREAL Air glasses and the new XREAL Air 2 model can do up to 120Hz in direct streaming mode without the involvement of the app. While using the app, you are still limited to an experimental 60Hz or 72Hz.

The pixel response time is very good. There is also little input latency. We managed to play on the XREAL Air and played a few platformers that required reasonable precision in jump timing without any issues.

On the other hand, we weren’t impressed with image sharpness and, especially, things like finer text, while the glasses were running in “tracking mode.” That is, when the glasses are connected to a phone and the Nebula app for AR/MR spatial mode is running. Depending on the tracking mode chosen, the visualization is static in space or follows the head movements “smoothly” in space. Both cause a lot of image flickering and smearing, and aren’t as sharp as when using the glasses in their “default” mode as a screen with no tracking involved.

Since the XREAL Air glasses are entirely powered via a Type-C port, one of the few actual tests we were able to run on them was to measure power consumption. We are happy to report that the glasses are quite efficient. With a fairly static image on the screen, such as browsing or working, they consumed around 1.5W – 1.8W, depending on the brightness setting. When playing a video with sound, the glasses consumed between 1.5 W and 1.6 W.п> <п>In more practical terms, watching a two-hour Netflix movie on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with the XREAL Air turned on ate up about 29 percent battery life, which is perfectly reasonable. This is almost identical to the battery usage of the original XREAL Air glasses. Perhaps with maximum brightness settings and a predominantly white image, there is a slightly higher consumption, but in reality not by much.

You should get a pair

We recently reviewed the TCL NXTWEAR S, as well as the original XREAL Air model, which we compared the XREAL Air 2 glasses to throughout the review. Again, nearly everyone in the office who tried the glasses said they’d love to have a pair of AR glasses, though opinions are divided on whether the price justifies them.

The prevailing opinion seems to be that AR glasses are a great travel companion, especially on planes. Some people have also expressed the desire to have a pair on their bedside table to consume content before falling asleep more comfortably. Gaming has not really been introduced into the circle of GSMArena employees, but regardless, it is undeniable that there are real use cases for such AR glasses.

The XREAL Air 2 glasses have a lot to offer as XREAL has improved the already solid ergonomics of the original Air glasses and created an even more comfortable pair. One that fits larger heads better thanks to longer temples and also allows for longer wearing sessions without putting too much pressure on the nose thanks to new nose pads and better weight distribution. The new, brighter displays are also very popular for outdoor operation, and the same goes for the improved speaker system and its improved overall quality and sound stage.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="inline-image" src="https://forum.sbenny.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/1699331787_156_XREAL-Air-2-review.jpg" width="1200" height="799" alt="Left: Air 2 • Right: Air“>
Left: Air 2 • Right: Air

We still feel that the Nebula app is in a very rough state, but even with that XREAL still has one of the most complete and complete sets of features available. If all of this is enough to convince you that you need AR glasses in your life, and you agree with our assessment that the XREAL Air 2 glasses are currently one of the best options around, then we need to move on to the question of price.

At the time of writing this review, the XREAL Air 2 retails for $399 / GBP 487.80 and can be available in gray or red, which is one more option than the original XREAL Air. These can still be purchased for $339/GBP 406.80.

Then there’s also the top option of the Air 2 Pro glasses with electrochromic dimming on the lenses for $449. If you’re willing to spend that much on AR glasses, our advice would be to go for an XREAL Air plus original XREAL Beam package , priced at $449 / GBP 538.80.

In fact, concluding this review, our final piece of advice for potential buyers would be to opt for the original XREAL Air for the best possible value without losing much compared to the new version.

That said, if your money is no object, the new model with its improved comfort is definitely an upgrade you’ll appreciate.

introduction If you follow the AR space, you’ve probably come across the Nreal brand.
