The globalization of information, the commercialization of conflicts and extreme mobility have greatly lowered the cost that individuals from third countries have to pay to participate in other people&#8217;s wars.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd of Italian citizens who joined the ranks of the Ukrainian army on the one hand and of the separatist forces on the other is a microcosm that well represents this trend.  According to Francesco Marone of ISPI, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion there were between fifty and sixty Italians engaged in the fighting, and it is difficult to quantify the number of new volunteers who have flocked since February.<\/p><div id=\"forum-2039079992\" class=\"forum-content-2 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The personal stories of these recruits are the most varied, but it is first of all important to distinguish the Italian fighters from armed groups apparently recruited in Syria and framed by the <em>contractor<\/em> Wagner in the Russian military.  The distinction is necessary both from a military and a sociological point of view.  In the still hypothetical Syrian case it is in fact a deployment of more or less cohesive brigades, united if not by the same operational history then at least by a similar experience in fighting alongside the Russians in Syria.  These foreign fighters (the term <em>foreign fighter <\/em>is mostly opposed by analysts because it evokes the specific experience of the ISIS recruitment mechanism, a unicum of recent history) are more comparable to mercenaries, mobilized to escape poverty and partly out of loyalty to the leaders of the Syrian factions than in the the last few weeks they have spread the call to arms.<\/p>\n<p>Italian volunteers have little in common with their counterparts especially since their recruitment appears to be markedly less deliberate, responding more to their individual needs and those of the breakaway republics.  It is highly inadvisable to try to make hasty psychology of individual Italians enlisted in Ukraine;  despite this, it is possible to take a look at the existing scientific literature on the subject of foreign (non-mercenary) fighters, while also remaining aware of the uniqueness of the different cases.<\/p><div id=\"forum-54563716\" class=\"forum-content forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>According to scholars Randy Borum and Robert Fein, foreign volunteers are in most cases moved by a sense of revenge against the enemy they are going to fight, or what they believe he represents, whether it is Western consumer capitalism, the materialism or a pluralistic society.  The search for social status and the desire to define one&#8217;s own identity are other extremely important motivations.<\/p>\n<p>Through this lens, and with all the necessary precautions, it is also possible to better understand the Italian volunteers in Ukraine.  What is striking is in fact the diversity of motivations that led many of them to fight and how these ideological motives are used politically by the factions in the field.<\/p><div id=\"forum-4229606345\" class=\"forum-content-3 forum-entity-placement\">\t\t<div class=\"ad-wrapper\" style=\"width:100%;min-height:250px;text-align:center\">\r\n\t\t\t<!-- In Article Blog -->\r\n\t\t\t<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n\t\t\t\t style=\"display:block; text-align:center;\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-layout=\"in-article\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3476569516614521\"\r\n\t\t\t\t data-ad-slot=\"9829044906\"><\/ins>\r\n\t\t\t<script>\r\n\t\t\t\t (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n\t\t\t<\/script>\r\n\t\t<\/div><\/div>\n<p>The example of Edy Ongaro, a communist who fell in Donbass where he fought since 2015, is instructive. The media report that Ongaro fought in the Prizrak (Phantom &#8220;) brigade, one of the most effective militias of the Lugansk&#8221; People&#8217;s Republic &#8220;(DNL).  The brigade, at least in the initial stages of the conflict, was not integrated into the command structure of the army of the &#8220;People&#8217;s Republic&#8221;, and like the other militias of the Donbass it should be conceived more than anything else as an autonomous group united only nominally to the other forces of the separatist army.<\/p>\n<p>Unit 404, a communist formation of which Ongaro was part, was particularly close to unit commander Alexei Markov, one of the very few leaders of Donbass to have died in an accident and not been assassinated following a power conflict between the capibastone of the DNL and the <em>handler<\/em> who on behalf of Moscow try to maintain a semblance of control over the militias.  While it is difficult to navigate the internal affairs of opaque separatist republics (often more gang-like than political organizations), foreign soldiers are likely to be more dependent on their commanders and thus serve as a corrective to Russian-speaking petty criminals and would-be mobsters established in the Donbass. after the outbreak of the war.<\/p>\n<p>Ongaro had fled to Ukraine following serious legal problems in Italy, as was the neo-fascist militant Andrea Palmieri, who was also a fighter for the DNL.  In general, right-wing extremists have attracted the bulk of Western attention also due to the close relationship that many of them have with white supremacist organizations in Europe and the United States (one among them Matthew Heimbach, neo-Nazi organizer of the notorious protest &#8221; Unite the Right &#8220;in Charlotteville in 2017).  In any case, the impact of these transnational networks seems stronger than for the recruitment systems on the left.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by the Soufan Center, more than thirty <em>white supremacist<\/em> for example, Italians would have participated in the fighting in Ukraine in the government deployment, at least until 2019. The Azov battalion is obviously the best known example, and already in 2014 a Corriere della Sera source even indicated the presence of Italian soldiers on active duty in the far-right formation.<\/p>\n<p>Compared to the first phase of the war, however, the situation for those fighting on the Ukrainian side is very different.  In recent years, Kiev has done a lot to incorporate the autonomous militias present on its territory into the National Guard, the paramilitary gendarmerie corps of the Ukrainian Interior Ministry.  This was done to strengthen the control of the Ukrainian authorities over these autonomous units, the same motivation that led the Zelensky government to immediately organize an integrated International Legion within the Territorial Defense Forces, the auxiliary reserve of the army. Ukrainian.<\/p>\n<p>This is where Giulia Schiff, a pilot of the Italian Air Force expelled in 2018, also enlisted.
