Other features include a 90Hz 1800p OLED display, 16GB of memory, up to 1TB of NVMe storage, dual Thunderbolt connectivity, and a 75Wh battery.

Design

The Zenbook 14 OLED has a clean and minimal aesthetic. A large Asus logo is engraved on the back of the display, which is only visible from certain angles. The bottom lid is also relatively empty except for a thin strip of vents.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

The display has a traditional hinge mechanism but the bottom edge of the display is designed to lift the base slightly for better air intake. The hinge allows the display to open fully 180 degrees and remain flat.

The Zenbook 14 OLED has an aluminum body. The only pieces of plastic are around the display and the hinge. Aluminum has a soft-touch matte finish which is unfortunately very difficult to keep clean. In a few moments after touching it, the entire surface is covered with very noticeable smudges.

   <ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block; text-align:center;"
     data-ad-layout="in-article"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3476569516614521"
     data-ad-slot="9829044906"></ins>

Build quality was poor. There was an audible crunch every time I took the device. Since this is not a retail unit and had been used by others before me, it could be that the problem was limited to this particular unit.

Another problem I had with the design was the way the display opened. The cavity cut into the base is too small to provide enough edge to lift the display, and your fingers keep sliding on the edge of the screen as you struggle to detach it. Once raised, the display can be opened with a finger without lifting the base with it.

The Zenbook 14 OLED comes in two colors, a greenish Aqua Caledon and the Ponder Blue that I have here. Both shades are quite muted, with Aqua Caledon looking more silver and Ponder Blue looking more black. I would recommend using the former as the darker blue model would show stains more easily.

Screen

The Zenbook 14 OLED has a 14-inch OLED display, 2880×1800, 90Hz resolution. The display supports 10-bit color and HDR10 content.

As with most OLED panels, the Zenbook 14 OLED display has an incredibly wide color gamut, with full coverage of the sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces and 97% Adobe RGB coverage.

By default, the display is set to a more vibrant color profile with a cool color temperature. Through the MyASUS software, the user can switch the display to sRGB, DCI-P3 or Display-P3 color spaces, as well as adjust various other settings.

While these profiles may be useful, they were not color accurate in my tests. The sRGB profile, for example, had a cooler white point with undersaturated greens and reds. Similar inaccuracies were also found in the other profiles. Profiles are useful for locking gamma to a particular color space without doing a full calibration, but if you intend to do any color sensitive work, it is highly recommended that you do a full hardware calibration.

Fortunately, the Zenbook 14 OLED’s panel is very good, so it responds well to calibration and you can get excellent results with it. Being an OLED panel, you also have the benefit of infinite contrast, with perfectly deep blacks. The added contrast adds depth and dimensionality to the image which is difficult to describe but easy to see, even on this relatively small panel.

Viewing angles are decent. OLED panels have no luminance shifts when viewed out of angle, but there is a visible change in color temperature, with out-of-angle corners looking much cooler than the front ones. Not a major issue, but something to keep in mind while doing color-sensitive work.

The 90Hz refresh rate offers a relatively modest increase in smoothness beyond 60Hz, but it’s still appreciated. Being an OLED panel, the display has exceptional response times, which incidentally tend to exaggerate motion sharpness and can make lower refresh rates appear sharper than an LCD.

Asus sets the display to 60Hz immediately, which some users may not realize. You will also need to go to the Intel Graphics Command Center to change the bit depth from 8-bit to 10-bit.

A major cause for concern with OLED panels is image retention and burn-in, especially on monitors which tend to have a lot of static elements like Chrome windows and taskbars. Fortunately, the new generation of OLED panels is much better in this respect.

On the Zenbook 14 OLED, I didn’t notice any image retention from things like the taskbar, even after being on the screen all day. Application windows also leave no traces after being minimized. Maintaining a 10% bright window in HDR and following it with a gray screen also showed no retention.

That’s not to say that retention and burn-in are impossible on this display. Even enabling the OLED burn-in prevention features in the MyASUS app, you may still find yourself with some burn-in in a few years. As a user, using a few extra tricks, like setting the taskbar to auto hide, changing window positions, maintaining a stricter sleep timer, enabling a screensaver, and using a lower brightness can help prolong the inevitable.

The MyASUS app has a Target mode feature designed to obscure parts of the desktop that are not the active window. For some reason, it would blank out the entire desktop even when the desktop was the center of attention and there was no way to stop doing that other than to disable the feature, so it wasn’t very useful.

The HDR performance on the Zenbook 14 OLED display is outstanding. While the display can only reach around 330 nits in SDR, it can go up to 600 nits in HDR. Unfortunately, HDR playback isn’t quite plug-n-play, as you must first enable it via Windows settings and also calibrate it, as the default peak luminance causes screen overexposure and hard clip highlighting.

However, once the peak luminance was slightly reduced, the HDR content looked amazing on the display. However, there was once again a bit of a hitch; I was only able to play HDR content locally and on YouTube. Netflix has refused to play HDR in Edge and in the Netflix app.

The display on this particular model is not a touchscreen, which seems like a missed opportunity. There is, however, a touchscreen version available, which has a brightness of slightly less than 550 nits.

Finally, being a glossy panel, reflections and glare are a problem. The panel is highly reflective and can be difficult to see in bright environments, even if the display itself is quite bright.

Overall, the Zenbook 14 OLED has an excellent quality display and is one of the strong points of the device.

Keyboard and trackpad

The Zenbook 14 OLED has a standard TKL layout with each key featuring a distinct chiclet-style design. By default, the top row is assigned shortcuts, but you can access the function keys by pressing the Fn key at the bottom. You can also swap the line entirely with the function keys and then press Fn to access the shortcuts.

Also in the top row is the power button, which has a built-in capacitive fingerprint sensor. The fingerprint sensor isn’t super fast but it works reliably. In the lower right corner, Asus has used an inverted T-shaped layout for the arrow keys, which makes them much easier to distinguish by touch when navigating.

The keyboard is comfortable to type with good spacing and decent tactile feedback. Most of the keys are where you expect them to be, so there’s a very small learning curve here. The keyboard is also backlit and the brightness can be adjusted in three steps. The backlight is uniform and readable in the dark. However, the visible LEDs on some keys are not very nice.

Annoyingly, the keyboard light can’t stay on all the time, as it turns off automatically after a few seconds of inactivity.

The trackpad underneath is spacious with a relatively smooth surface that isn’t too grippy. It is comfortable to use and all gestures work reliably. Of course, the party trick here is the Asus Numberpad feature, which projects the numeric keypad, allowing you to quickly type in a few numbers without the need for a separate numeric keyboard. This function can be activated with the button in the upper right corner of the trackpad.

Speakers and webcams

The Zenbook 14 OLED has a pair of bottom-up speakers on both sides. By themselves, the speakers sound terrible and are also not particularly loud.

Thankfully, the pre-installed and activated Dolby Atmos app comes to the rescue and significantly improves speaker quality, to the point that they sound pretty decently, at least for things like watching YouTube videos. However, I would recommend using headphones whenever possible.

The Zenbook 14 OLED also has a 720p webcam. The image quality is not very good and the low resolution damages the image further. Also, the webcam doesn’t support Windows Hello, so you can only use the fingerprint sensor.

Connectivity

The Zenbook 14 OLED has most of its ports on the right side. Here, you’ll find a full-size HDMI 2.0b port, a headphone jack, two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports, and a microSD slot. On the left is a single USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 port.

The Thunderbolt 4 ports also double as a charging port for the notebook, so it’s a shame that both are on the same side as you’re limited to one-sided charging. Plus, since one of them is reserved for charging, you’re actually left with only one USB-C port.

The USB-C ports are also very close together and the headphone jack too, and they get in the way of each other a bit. A full-sized SD slot would have been preferable too, as the only devices using microSD these days are action cameras and drones.

In addition to the wired options, you also get dual-band Wi-Fi 6 connectivity and Bluetooth 5.2.

Software

The Zenbook 14 OLED comes with Windows 11 Pro out of the box. I’ve come to really hate this version of Windows. It’s full of bugs and bad design ideas with lots of features that work worse or don’t work at all than Windows 10. No amount of words can express my disappointment with this release and what a downgrade it is from Windows 10.

If this was running AMD Ryzen or a previous generation of Intel CPUs, I’d recommend installing Windows 10 and never looking back. Unfortunately, while Windows 11 is optimized for the hybrid architecture of Intel 12th generation processors, Windows 10 is not, which could cause some problems in some applications and games. It’s an unfortunate situation, which means you’re stuck facing Microsoft’s incompetence and stubbornness for the foreseeable future.

For its part, Asus has kept the Zenbook 14 OLED relatively bloatware-free, with the only offensive software being McAfee antivirus. There are also a couple of Asus apps, including GlideX, which is a paid app that lets you use a smartphone or tablet as a second screen. Everything else is really just the junk that Microsoft forces in every new Windows installation.

Regardless of where it comes from, it can be removed with relative ease. The only drawback is that some of them can be removed from the new Settings screen while others only from the old Control Panel, but this is once again an issue with Windows 11, not the Zenbook 14 OLED per se.

One piece of software you should definitely keep installed is the MyASUS app, which gets its own dedicated keyboard shortcut. Through this app, you can check battery charging settings, fan profiles, OLED pixel refresh settings, display color profiles, and webcam and microphone settings. You can also update the drivers for your machine and check out the promotional offers that Asus has available on various software and services. It is reasonably well designed and easy to use.

Performance

My review unit of the Zenbook 14 OLED is equipped with an Intel Core i7-1260P. It has 4 P-cores and 8 E-cores, for a total of 16 threads. The P-cores / E-cores have a base clock of 2.1 GHz / 1.5 GHz and can increase up to 4.7 GHz / 3.4 GHz. The base power is 28 W, but can increase up to at 64 W.

Intel Xe integrated graphics is also included, which is the only GPU on this machine. It has a maximum frequency of 1.4 GHz.

The MyASUS application allows you to adjust the fan profile, which in turn also adjusts the performance of the device. There are three modes: Performance, Standard and Whisper.

Performance mode runs the fan to maximum. It runs faster under load and even more frequently and can get quite noisy. Standard mode causes the fan to spin a little slower and also increases more gradually. Under load, however, it sounds almost as good as in Performance mode.

In terms of clock speeds, there are no major differences between these two modes. While the aforementioned boost clock speeds are achievable in quick bursts, the CPU spends most of its time at much lower speeds under extended load, i.e. around 2.5 GHz for P-cores and 2.2 GHz for E -core. This is the same for Performance and Standard mode.

Whisper mode starts the same way, but after a short time it drops to 1.5 GHz on P cores and 1.2 GHz on E cores. This 40% reduction in clock speeds results in a performance decrease of approximately 35%.

For that leak, Whisper Mode is pretty much exactly what it says on the box. The fan is barely audible unless you are in an extremely quiet environment and it never turns on, regardless of system load. If things get too hot, keep slowing down the system to keep things quiet.

When left to run in Performance mode, the 1260P performs well. The high thread count is advantageous for multi-threaded applications such as Cinebench and Blender, which generate a tile for each thread count. Alder Lake’s high IPC performance also benefits single-threaded activities.

Media encoding and decoding performance was decent but not quite at the workstation level. Attempting to decode 4K ProRes 422HQ in DaVinci Resolve yielded good results, with good timeline performance even with color grading and some tweaking applied. This, however, was only true for 24p and 30p content. 4K 60p videos in ProRes were not handled well. Likewise, BlackMagic RAW’s performance was fine for 4K at lower frame rates, but quickly plummeted to 6K or higher frame rates. Plus, quickly run out of 16GB memory for larger projects.

If you’re just working on small projects with less demanding codecs and resolutions, the transcoding performance here should be sufficient for occasional use. For larger workloads, you should consider a laptop or desktop workstation.

Storage performance is excellent. The included 512GB Samsung 980 Pro PCIe 4.0 SSD performs very well, producing excellent read / write results.

Gaming performance is understandably poor. The integrated Xe graphics are simply too weak to run the latest AAA titles at 1080p 30fps even at the lowest settings. The best you can do are old 3D games, some competitive multiplayer titles, and 2D games.

The thermal solution sometimes seems a bit inadequate considering how hot 12th Gen Intel chips can get. The 1260P often hits its thermal limit of 100 ° C even with less demanding applications, which ultimately causes it to slow down if the ambient temperature is too high. The single fan with a small heatsink has to work too much and can often get a little noisy as a result, unless it’s in Whisper mode.

The back of the laptop also tends to get extremely hot under load which is not bearable for actual use of the laptop. Fortunately, the area around the keyboard and trackpad remains at a comfortable temperature, so if you’re using the machine on a desk, you don’t feel the heat too much.

Overall, the Zenbook 14 OLED offers good performance for everyday use for a thin and light machine. However, gaming performance is virtually non-existent and the machine can overheat under load.

Drums

The Zenbook 14 OLED has a 75 Wh battery. The laptop comes with a 65W USB-PD charger which claims to charge the battery to 60% in 49 minutes.

In a mixed use consisting of web browsing, document editing and video playback with the display set to 90Hz and 250 nits of brightness and performance set to Standard / Balanced mode, the Zenbook 14 OLED provided approximately 5-6 hours of battery life. . This could be further improved by using the Whisper profile, reducing the brightness and keeping the display at the default 60Hz mode. However, the overall battery life is disappointing.

Unfortunately, as beautiful as the OLED display is, it can consume far more power than a typical LCD, especially at higher refresh rates while viewing predominantly bright content. Things like documents and web pages can end up being much more power hungry on an OLED than on an LCD.

The MyASUS app has options that allow you to select the amount of battery you want to charge. You can choose between 100%, 80% or 60% and the lower the figure, the longer the theoretical battery life. It’s a good option, especially for those who don’t necessarily use their notebooks outside.

Conclusion

The Zenbook 14 OLED is a good thin and light laptop. The crown jewel is the OLED display, which looks stunning. Aside from that, performance is good for office, school, and occasional use of media creation, the keyboard is comfortable, the trackpad works well, and it has the awesome built-in number pad when needed. Windows 11 is what it is, but otherwise the software is relatively clean and the bundled Asus apps are well-designed and useful.

On the downside, the Core i7-1260P tends to overheat, and the Zenbook 14 OLED’s cooling can’t always keep up. The port layout is a bit awkward and the webcam quality is mediocre. Battery life is also disappointing.

The Zenbook 14 OLED starts at around $ 1000 for the Core i5 model, although the Core i7 variant tested here is around $ 1300. I think the i5 model would be a good sweet spot and should alleviate some of the problems with cooling and durability. battery. It’s a great option and I would recommend to most users. The i7 model makes less sense to me and if you must have a powerful notebook then a thin and light one may not be the right form factor for you.

Professionals

Great OLED display

Comfortable keyboard

Good trackpad with smart integrated numeric keypad

Good performance from the i7-1260P

against

Limited ports with awkward position

Mediocre webcam

Insignificant battery life

The i7 model heats up

The Zenbook 14 OLED is Asus’ thin and light premium laptop.
