Percy Jackson: The Lightning Thief is a film adaptation of the 2005 fantasy novel by Rick Riordan. When 16 year old Percy begins getting attacked by monsters left and right, he has to seek safety at a camp full of other kids dealing with the same issue. He quickly learns that he is the child of Greek god Poseidon andThi s is being accused of stealing Zeus' weapon and he must figure out how to clear his name before a World War starts.
Review:
This movie takes one of the greatest YA books of all time and spits on it, it ignores such basic aspects of the plot like the characters' ages and major plot fights for absolutely no reason. One of the most important part of the books is a prophecy given to Percy stating that when he turns 16 he will decide the fate of the world, however in the movies he's already 16 which means they have to change the age of the prophecy to 20 which significantly changes the impact . On top of that when demigods turn 12 they begin to smell much stronger to monsters which means there is absolutely no way Percy would be able to survive until 16 without even knowing he was a demigod. Another aspect they neglected to include is the fight between Percy and Aries, this is one of the most important parts of the book as it reveals that Aries is the one who had really stolen the lightning bolt but the movie just gets rid of Aries’ character and makes Hades the one who steals it instead. This just doesn’t make sense as we see in the books that Hades doesn’t want another war, he has no incentive to start one and would prefer to keep the peace. Even when you stop comparing the movie to the books the movie is still very mediocre, the pacing is terrible, the gods are assholes and the characters just aren’t likable. They wasted an incredible cast with their bad writing and overall just not understanding the source material, it's a disappointment to say the least.
