It's Hannah's sweet sixteen birthday party, and everything has to be absolutely perfect. However, a horrific accident on the night of party finds the life of her family unravelling instead, as the aftermath descends into a chaos of dark secrets, where friend cannot be known from foe.

Review:
This essentially a book about how messy teenagers can be and what happens when the adults are drawn into their self-serving mess, especially selfish adults who are not exactly able to make sound decisions and judgements.

An accident that occurs in Hannah's sweet sixteenth sleepover isn't what it seems - but we are actually given the truth of the situation about 30% into the book. The book deals more with the human side of things, how each character deals with the aftermath, how they react to it. The teenagers are a messy bunch - self-serving and more obsessed with pushing blame onto one another, and, more disturbingly, using the incident to climb to the top of social rankings. Hannah has been on the fringe of the popularity circle, and now she sees the opportunity jump into the social hierarchy, by manipulating events to discard another. It's frankly quite Mean Girl-ish, but darker.

The adults are problematic in their own way. Hannah's mother Kim is more obsessed with her image as the perfect suburban mum, rather than to deal with the issues of her daughter and her husband head-on. Her husband, Jeff, finds himself entangled with one of Hannah's friends. Although not of his own free will and he is careful to draw the line, all of us can foresee where this will eventually end up.

I don't actually quite know what to make out of this book. I enjoyed it to a degree, but every single character in this book is just plain unlikeable. There isn't one character to root for because all of them are rather terrible people in their own ways. As far as twist and turns go, there are a few, but nothing particularly surprising or shocking.

All the same, I think Harding writes rather well, as the prose is quite easy to digest. It's a good, fast read for that free and breezy afternoon, especially if you are a fan of domestic thrillers. But prepared to feel quite frustrated at the characters and their motivations.

Would you recommend this to other users? As said above, fans of domestic thrillers may like this. If you like reading about and into the psyche of problematic teenagers, this may be a book for you as well. It's a decent read to pass the time, but not anything particularly memorable.
