The fan-base effectively abused "the modder".
I won't name who and won't say how they did, to prevent more abuse and harassment.
Now about the games being shared elsewhere;
If a mod is exclusive, not a lot of people will have it,
at the same time, not a lot of players are cheating at those games,
which also means that the odds of game's developers updating and patching the game is lower.
If a game gets updated with the sole purpose of beating the mod,
then it would be harder to update the mod, maybe even to a point that is would be impossible.
There are also some times when games/titles aren't popular anymore or a better game is made,
then those old games simply get forgotten, regardless if it's modded or not.
