Name of the movie you are reviewing: Lajja (Shame) 2001 Bollywood Drama
Lajja is a story that looks at the oppression of women and atrocities committed against Females in india . Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi , We are taken through the lives of four women .
This movie did not perform well at the box office perhaps because it raises questions that society does not wish to deal with and makes most uncomfortable .
Review:
Lajja has a star studded Cast with one of the best Performances given by Rekha .
The movie revolves around the life of Vaidehi ( Manisha Koirala ) who is married to A rich man Raghu ( Jackie Shroff ) who is broad minded in a sexual sense with a roving eye and this does not sit well with His wife Vaidehi who has old fashioned values .
Problems arise between the two when Vaidehi refuses the advances made by Raghu's business partner , Raghu gets Angry and Tells Vaidehi to go back to india .
Raghu has a bad accident and is now unable to have children, they find out Vaidehi is pregnant . Raghu smooth talks her into coming back to him after a sly talk with his father (Suresh Oberoi) , who suggests they can take the baby when he / she is born and Raghu can give Vaidehi a divorce or they can kill her .
This is overheard from the family Doctor and he warns Vaidehi and tells her not to return to New york .
From There Vaidehi's path crosses with Raju (Anil Kapoor) the thief who Who helps her hide from Raghu's search party . They crash a wedding and Meet the bride to be Maithili ( Mahima Chaudary) who's father is being pressured for more Dahej (dowry /bride price ) by the groom's parents .
A beautiful music performance is given by Sonali Bendre (Mujhe Sajan Ke ghar Jana hai )
Vaidehi still on the run now goes to Haripur and there she meets Janaki (Madhuri Dixit ) a livewire stage actress , who happens to be two months pregnant and is set to marry her sweetheart . But those plans are destroyed by the lecherous machinations Of Pursshotam (Tinu anand) Who wants Janaki for himself even though He is married to a girl young enough to be his daughter .
Janaki finds out about the Reward Raghu has put out for finding Vaidehi and Pursshotam's plan to Get that Reward .
Vaidehi and Janaki become fast friends but things take a bad turn .
Vaidehi then boards a train with the help of Pursshotam's wife but there is an ambush and she faints . She is rescued by Bulwa (Ajay Devgan ) a sort of rebel who protects people .
In this remote village in Uttar Pradesh Vaidehi meets Ram-dhulari a midwife with progressive thinking . Ram-dhulari created employment for the village women and tries to educate people . Vaidehi is shocked When She witnesses a villager trying to drown a newborn babygirl in a vat of milk with a plea to god to send the next child as a boy . The babygirl is saved in the nick of time by Ram-dhulari , The villagers live in fear of the wealthy land owners Gajendar (Dani Denzongpa ) and his brother Vijendar ( Gulshan Grover )
A snippet of Bulwa's life is brought to light, when he was a boy and there was a major drought . The only water was available in Gajendar's Property . Bulwa's mom begged for a Glass of water and when Gadjendar gave it to her , he decided to put his hands on her body , Bulwa's mom then threw the water on his face and Slapped Gajendar . For that Insult Gajendar laid an accusation of thievery on her and Plunged both her hands in Boiling Oil !
Some years later Bulwa grew up and sliced Gajendar's arm off .
Ram-dhular's son and Gajendar's daughter fall inlove but Gajendar finds out and orders the boy to be slain since he is of a lower caste .
Gajendar plots a way to get at Bulwa and Raghu joins hands with him to Get Vaidehi back , Things go south and Gajendar's men are killed and Vaidehi stops Bulwa from Killing Raghu . As a way to bring fear to the people and flush out Bulwa , Ram-dhulari is captured by Gajendar's men and she is gang raped and burned alive .
Gajendar now stands for election hut his attempt is foiled by Vaidehi , all of the Village women now stand together and Give statements as to His Wrong doing . Raghu finally understands what Vaidehi stands for .
Despite how serious this movie seems there are some comedic relief by Johnny Lever and Anil Kapoor. Memorable song performance by Urmilla Matondkar and Madhur Dixit .
Would you recommend this to other users? Yes I would Definitely recommend this movie . The month of august is women's month in south africa and August 9th is women's day , after watching this movie . I realised the plight of women are the same no matter where in the world we are . This movie made me laugh and cry and feel shame (Lajja) That as women we give life to the very men who seek to destroy us
A deep hitting scene for me from this movie , was Janaki questioning why In the Ramayan , Sita had to give a test by fire and even though she passed it , she was still exiled while she was pregnant . Women have been oppressed and told how to think , act and behave since time began . When this changes so will the lives of people and the progress of society .
