Name of the movie you are reviewing: The Hours (2002)

An Oscar winning film that allowed Nicole Kidman to take home the Academy Award for best actress for her portrayal of one of the most important feminist writers, Virginia Woolf. The movie is very loosely based on Virginia Woolf's life whilst writing her novel, 'Mrs Dalloway'.

Review:
Having read Virginia Woolf's original novel, 'Mrs Dalloway', there can be clear influences seen in Stephen Daldry's 2002 film, 'The Hours', in terms of grand narrative and themes. The original 'Mrs Dalloway' presents how literature has transcended time, shown through careful selection and brings about the notion of the consolation of death after struggles and hardships during life. Literature can be seen as an escape for the titular Clarissa Dalloway as it gives comfort to her impending mortality. Daldry’s film, 'The Hours', reflects many of Woolf's original thematic concerns as the Character Virginia in the film can be seen tethering between life and death whilst the contemplation of suicide is prevalent. This can be further seen in the scene where she is writing 'Mrs Dalloway' and she says “Someone must die so the others can see the values in life’ demonstrating the pessimistic outlook she has developed and the need for a beacon of light in order for others to be aware of repression. 'The Hours' creates a clearer picture of Virginia Woolf's original feminist values and perspectives presenting how literature has the power to explore female experiences and challenge patriarchal force. Comparing Woolf’s indictment of patriarchal forces in England in the 1920s to Daldry’s twenty-first century exploration of changing female experiences across a century reveals both the continuity and change of women’s experiences over time. However, 'The Hours' also demonstrates the ongoing, present need for the emancipation of female voices. Overall 'The Hours' can be seen very intentionally connecting Woolf's feminist ideology and enables us to understand them both more clearly as texts aware of their capacity, as literary works, to champion women’s liberation.

Would you recommend this to other users? Again, it is an oscar winning film, but for best actress. If you are interested in Nicole Kidman's acting portfolio than I would suggest checking it out. Despite doing a good job standing on it's own, the themes really come to the forefront much more if you have read the original 'Mrs Dalloway'. 'The Hours' is not as exciting nor entertaining as modern films, however it does present some very complex and multifacted themes in a nuanced and well thought out way. If you are a film buff, then perhaps give it a shot.
