When it's not worth the squeeze, leave.

I can make the crow sing.
I can turn its dry laugh into a melody.
But I have to lie -
convince it that singing
will make people love it.
Much as I love to make
one less lonely creature,
I know
I wouldn't be able to keep up the lie.

I can make the vulture care beyond flesh.
I can teach it to make someone
more important than its hunger.
But I have to tear off my flesh to do it.
The idea of being the girl
who tamed the monster
is appealing.
But I know
I don't want to lose a part of myself
to be worth something.

I can tell you what you want to hear -
give you the validation you're seeking
But then I'd make you thirsty for more.
I'm not an endless well.
I know, eventually, I'd run out
of the right things to say.
So I go.
Because I know
I don't want to leave you worse
than you were, before.
