Wide-Eyed Children

the salt from my eyes streaking down to my cheeks
they hurt my bruised lips
but I'll lick them off, clean my mouth
taste it with my tongue while my lips sting

growing up in these four walls
only had all thoughts for the good and bad
they tell me it's the truth and I believe
but the door is open, the door is wide open

is the holy city for the wide-eyed children
who've seen too much, who feel so much?
Lord, will You be by the pearly gates and look us all
tell us You're sorry but we can't go?

my eyes stray, Father, and I look at the garden
but ones I want aren't ones I'm given
I followed my heart and my hands complied
but they have struck my hands and smacked my mouth

how could such a thing be a sin?
when she worshiped me with love and I the same?
I look at You with tearful eyes
drop to my knees and cry to You

her mouth reminds me of a sweet fruit
and my hand shakes long after she's gone

the salt from my eyes streaking down to my cheeks
they hurt my bruised lips
but I'll lick them off, clean my mouth
taste it with my tongue while my lips sting
