Huawei has announced a long-term global cross-licensing agreement with Swedish company Ericsson. The partnership covers standards such as 3GPP, ITU, IEEE and IETF for 3G, 4G and 5G cellular technologies.

The deal covers the sale of both network infrastructure and consumer devices, and the companies will be able to use each other’s standardized patented technologies.

Alan Fan, head of Huawei’s intellectual property department, commented that both companies value each other’s intellectual property and that such an agreement creates a “stronger patent environment.” The partnership is also a testament that intellectual property must be respected and protected, he added.

Huawei adds that it is at the top of the European Patent Office’s applicants rankings with more than 4,500 patents filed.

The Swedish company expects revenue from the licensing deals in 2023 to reach SEK 11 billion (nearly $1 billion). In her press release it is stated that Ericsson holds over 60,000 patents and occupies a leading position as a supplier of 5G.
