Samsung has fixed a GPS problem on several older Galaxy S models and provided them with updates. And when we say “old,” we mean it: last month it was the Galaxy S8 from 2017 and the S7 from the year before. There is now an update for an increasingly older series, the 2015 Galaxy S6 family.

The update was identified in the Netherlands and Belgium. The Dutch Galaxy S6 and S6 edge purchased from Vodafone are getting firmware versions G920FXXU6EVG1 And G925FXXU6EVG3, respectively. In Belgium, the SIM-free Galaxy S6 and S6 edge + are being updated.

This is expected to slowly expand to cover all versions of the S6, those of the carrier and unlocked, as well as those in other countries. If you don’t see a notification, you can manually check for updates. If you still don’t see it, you will have to arm yourself with patience.

The update doesn’t mention a GPS fix like it did with the Galaxy S8, although that’s probably what it is. The change log only talks about stability improvements and bug fixes, “new and / or improved features” and “further performance improvements”.

It’s also a much smaller upgrade, weighing in at less than 13MB, compared to the S8’s 420MB upgrade. It goes without saying that this doesn’t include a new version of Android, not even a new security patch. However, any update is a surprise given that it was launched 7 and a half years ago.

The Samsung Galaxy A40 is much newer, having hit the streets in 2019, but it is already nearing the end of its 4-year period of guaranteed security patches. The A40 was running the July patch and is now moving to the September patch with a 280MB update (A405FNXXS4CVH1).

The gap is expected as the phone is currently in the quarterly update schedule. However, when it turns 4 in March 2019 it could drop to the semi-annual schedule (which houses some A-series models from 2018, but also some contemporary models like the Galaxy A30, A60, A70, A80 and A90 5G).
