Samsung has announced that it is preparing an irregular heart rate monitoring feature that will debut with the upcoming Galaxy Watch6 series and will eventually reach older models as well. It will be introduced via Samsung’s Health Monitor app, which is also used for ECG measurements.
And while unconfirmed, it appears that only Samsung smartphone owners will receive notifications for irregular heart rates as the app is only available for Samsung devices. It also appears that irregular heart rate tracking requires that continuous heart rate tracking be enabled, which seems pretty reasonable.
The feature itself aims to identify atrial fibrillation (AFib), although it is not intended to diagnose the condition. Samsung emphasizes that it is not a substitute for a real doctor and only aims to shed some light on the problem and encourage the user to visit a doctor for further evaluation. The feature will also help you keep an eye on your heart health between doctor visits.
More than 70 countries have approved Samsung’s Health Monitor app and its ECG capabilities, but irregular heart rate monitoring will require further regional approval. For now, only South Korea, the United States, Argentina, Azerbaijan, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Georgia, Guatemala, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Panama and the United Arab Emirates have approved the new feature.
