Presentation

Unlike other recent Dirt games, which have had some oomph, this game is all about color. The wide range of locations all have their own unique features and visual styles. Meanwhile, the dynamic weather system helps bring out impressive effects like lights and reflections. This is especially noticeable when the rain begins to fall, creating puddles on the tracks. While the cars themselves aren’t the most detailed you’ll see, they look great. They also show visible signs of damage and dirt, with mud splashes along the surfaces.

The sound design is equally impressive. While Nolan North and Troy Baker’s vocal talents are somewhat wasted, the soundtrack fits in well with the overall vibe. Combined with the vibrant graphics, it creates a fun party feeling that flows throughout the game. As you might expect, the sound effects work well too, with the rumbling sound of engines accompanying the action. There are some technical issues but none are interrupting the game and should be fixed in the next patches.

Final verdict

Dirt 5 is a welcome return in form for the series, which was once one of the best arcade racing franchises. This new game dates back to its origins and has the same feel as the previous entries such as Dirt 2 and 3. This is a good thing in a crowded field with good drivers, as Dirt 5 manages to carve out a place for itself.

Few titles contain as much jaw-dropping fun and pure fun as this one, making it a must buy for any fan of old-school arcade racing games.

Dirt 5 is available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
