Game

The gameplay experience of Fallout 4 unfolds in various directions, intertwined with mixed results. First, there’s the wandering you do through the Commonwealth, Fallout’s radiated vision of Boston and the surrounding area. Firefights and combat are important in the game from moment to moment. Equally significant is collecting junk and usable items from the environments. Several factions live in the Commonwealth, with which you strive to advance the story. Missions to find, companions to meet, marauders to fight: there are many contents to manage.

There is great satisfaction in collecting the loot and breaking it down into production parts. Then you combine them to create or upgrade weapons, armor, and other valuable gear. In the beginning, you find a power armor that you modify in the same way. Since tinkering and experimenting are so important to the game, it makes all the material research work more rewarding.

Where things get risky is in the sense of plot realization. Some side missions are fun and engaging, especially those relating to your loyal companions. Others, usually tied to factions, tend to feel like empty occupants with no meaning. One particular mid-game reveal changes how you end up looking at a faction, but comes hours later.

In addition, the game has some underlying problems that tire very quickly. Some combat tools at your disposal need a lot of upgrades before they become useful. The game’s SPECIAL system for gaining experience and unlocking perks is designed primarily for combat. Intelligent talking or misleading rarely works in situations, unlike in previous Fallout games. Taking on missions becomes more and more important to progress in the perks you want to fully unlock.
