Game
The act of fighting Dr. Nefarious and his minions takes the form of classic Ratchet & Clank gameplay. That means using wacky and extraordinary weapons to blast your way, shoot and blast through lush alien worlds and dangerous alien enemies.
The most notable change is the way third-person shooter mechanics have been adapted to be more in line with what we’re used to today. The shot is now mapped to a button on the shoulder. You have more control over the aim of your guns. And the default lateral movement is now submachine gun. It’s fantastic in that it structures the gameplay to foster the insane action the series has always excelled at. And it makes previous Ratchet & Clank games quite awkward in comparison.
Add to this some of the loudest and most over-the-top guns that have ever existed and the end result is a fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping experience that has delighted me with how smooth it feels after all these years.
Mode
To keep the eight to ten hour adventure fresh, the developers tried to add variety through different game modes and optional side missions. Unfortunately, I’ve found these additional game variations a lot more of a mixed bag.
On the one hand, I loved Qwark’s 2D platforming levels, which change the pace of gameplay and give an exhilarating backstory to Qwark and the story of Dr. Nefarious.
On the other hand, the grueling sewer level presents a lazy design and a frustrating goal. This is only partially saved by the fact that it is a non-mandatory secondary search.
Sitting in the middle are the sometimes optional, sometimes non-battle battle missions. Vehicle-based missions are exhilarating and often breathtaking. But fighting waves of enemies on foot had tired me, despite the creative arsenal I had at my disposal.
Finally, this entry marks the first appearance of multiplayer in Ratchet & Clank game. Multiplayer lacks the communication modes and options of more modern iterations. But there’s still fun to be had by unloading all those weird Ratchet & Clank weapons on your friends. The variety of maps and skins keeps the experience fresh even after several rounds.
