Likewise, Tearaway Unfolded’s claim as a “3D platform” is not always justified. I’m all for experimenting in this genre, but not having access to a jumping skill for the first hour felt like a step too far. Thankfully, there are some really interesting puzzles and platforming sections scattered throughout the game. And when these work in tandem with the unique controls, the game truly unlocks a special feeling. But there is confusion at the heart of Tearaway Unfolded’s design that permeated the whole experience.

Final verdict

Tearaway Unfolded features a captivating and customizable papercraft world with an over-reliance on gimmicks that results in a design that sometimes feels as thin as paper. When the mechanics and controls click with the timeless graphics, the game reaches a truly remarkable level of originality and innovation. However, some aftereffects of its portable roots limit the game from maintaining this feeling during its 12 hours of battery life.
