Familiar faces

In terms of history, this game takes place over a unique period of time, thousands of years before Luke Skywalker’s birth. However, it also takes place hundreds of years after the games of the Knights of the Old Republic. The result is an environment that is both familiar and new.

This also extends to the available characters. You can choose from a number of family members Star Wars archetypes, including Jedi and Sith warriors, as well as smugglers and bounty hunters.

There are also other “out of the box” archetypes. This includes an Old Republic soldier and an Imperial agent (think of this as the evil science fiction James Bond).

Each character has a unique story, interesting dialogue and fun designs. And with these characters, the game achieves one more goal Star Wars games don’t meet. It doesn’t just look like a galaxy far, far away … but also hears I like.

A mixed bag

The Old Republic is a game determined to offer you a lot of replay value. However, this sometimes leads to him putting in a little too much effort.

For example, there are several opportunities to control a ship. This includes piloting your main spaceship through some arcade-like shooting sections or piloting a smaller Starfighter against other players.

It looks neat, but it’s not as fun as the main gameplay. Likewise, some PvP war zones feel more like futuristic competitive sports than the kind of narrative-based combat that players want.

In the end, though, it’s hard to hate The Old Republic for these additions. The core gameplay is strong enough to keep me coming back, and it’s hard to fault a game whose main sin is trying to give players too much do.

Final verdict

All MMORPG lovers and Star Wars should give The Old Republic a chance. Considering it’s free, you literally have nothing to lose.

Over time, this game may be supplanted by a newer one Star Wars MMORPG. But right now, this is your only chance to experience the Star Wars universe in this kind of unique and engaging way. And it’s worth playing simply because it sets the standard for all of the future Star Wars games so damn high!
