A true online community

For many people, WoW becomes a social experience very quickly. To maximize success, players join guilds to help them navigate difficult dungeons or simply survive open world PvP. And these guilds often have extensive plans for future dungeons, raids, and other group activities.

Some people don’t like this due to how long it can take. After all, if you raid the guild every weekend, the game might start to feel a bit like a second job.

However, I see this community building as an added bonus of the game. You can always avoid guilds, skip raids and play with the ease you want. But if you want to connect with the community and maybe even make lifelong friendships, the opportunity is there.

Final verdict

Ultimately, I recommend everyone to play World of Warcraft at least once. The game literally has something for everyone.

It’s not just about fighting and leveling up. Your character can take up a trade (such as a blacksmith) and work to sell his wares for in-game gold.

Maybe you want to get out of the script a bit? Numerous role-playing guilds allow you to enjoy a kind of “game within the game” and further expand your character’s story.

Don’t like the game the way it is? There are countless legal mods that allow you to customize the experience and interact with WoW on your terms.

Finally, there are more expansions than you can shake an enchanted staff. Some of them extend the game’s connection to its past (Wrath of the Lich King is like a great sequel to Warcraft III, for example). Other expansions bring players face to face with their past, with Blizzard releasing a WoW Classic mode that transports players to the game as it was in 2004.

Other expansions are just plain fun. Do you want to fight orcs like a kung-fu panda? Then Mists of Pandaria has you covered.

All in all, World of Warcraft remains the best MMORPG ever made. Not all expansions are great, but the core gameplay remains amazing. There is a reason this is still the gold standard for every MMORPG of the past 20 years!
