When Hello and Goodbye Collided

When I was young I learned
that paradoxes are absurd propositions -
heaven and earth can never take up the same space.
Since then, I found myself falling in love
with contradictions.

Oil and water can never kiss -
didn’t they say that?
But if you shook hard enough
you won’t tell one from the other.
Paradoxes aren’t set in stone
or so I believed.
Since then, I found myself falling in love
with the idea that every contradiction
can be compelled -
if you tried hard enough.

I skinned my knees
I broke my bones
I tore through my own flesh
I stabbed my heart
trying to prove
that I, alone, am invincible.

And then I met you.
You were the sun.
I was the moon.
You were hello and goodbye
under a veil of skin.

And I am stubborn.
and I wanted you.
and you didn’t bend.
and I took my hello
and you held on to your goodbye
and our hello and goodbye collided.
