The Arcana - A Mystic Romance is a Visual Novel app published by Nix Hydra. Under the romance and fantasy genre, the main game follows the story of an amnesiac magician as they try to figure out their past, and in the process gain the favor of one of the 6 romanceable characters. Each character features a good and bad ending depending on the choices made during the course of the game. The entire game is free and it is possible to complete the narrative without spending a single coin; however, in-game currency is available and enhances gameplay, and can also be earned through various built-in features. The Story
The first five books of the main game, each named after one of the the 21 Major Arcana in a tarot deck and each with 3 chapters, act as a prologue introducing your character, whose name and pronouns you can customize, and each of your 6 romanceable characters. The story then diverges with each partner having their own Book 6 to 21 along with an epilogue of the good or bad ending. Currently, the stories for the last 3 characters are being written and constantly updated in the app. Narrative-wise, The Arcana is a beautiful game; it develops each character very well, even side characters. The world-building is believable as well, referencing medieval way of life and cross-referencing to various cultures, treating each with respect. The mythology is also well-developed. Throughout, the tumultuous narrative, the game manages to retain its focus on the main character and their partner, highlighting their both individual development and budding romance.
The App
The app itself contains many features. The user interface is divided into 5 tabs, one with the main game, the others with daily rewards, daily challenges and collectibles, mini-games, and an in-game store. The app also features side stories focusing on non-romanceable characters. In the main game, a key (a type of in-game currency) is needed to read each chapter and only 3 are available at the beginning, replenishing every 24 hours. Coins can be spent to unlock additional artwork in the main game, along with various uses in the other tabs. Often, especially during holidays, the developers open in-game sale, or unlimited chapter replays. I tried the game when it was in beta and both the app and the story now is definitely better and far more organized.
The MOD
Debby's mod works perfectly! I have been able to complete several collectibles and win several mini-games because of the unlimited keys and coins from the mod. Debby also constantly updates the mod whenever an app store update is released and I am consistently amazed at the speed and dedication that is poured into it! Thank you so much for sharing, Debby!
