Google started updating supported Pixels to Android 13 yesterday, but that’s not what some users are seeing – several users of the r / GooglePixel subreddit are reporting that they’ve received an Android 12-based update instead.

It’s not even a small update, but a fairly hefty 2GB download. It appears to be a recent update (early July, later version) that includes the July security patch and a fix for a GPS issue.

But it’s not the Android 13 update that people have come to expect. There have been reports from Germany and the UK so far, mostly from Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owners, but they’re not limited to just these two. That said, it seems like the problem doesn’t happen too often, but it’s something to be aware of if you’re using a Pixel.

Some users have found an alternative solution: activate the Beta channel, which will download the stable version of Android 13, then deactivate it. However, if you see a notification for Android 12 instead of 13, it would be better to pause the update and wait a day or two until Google fixes the problem.
