Lately Marvel’s Avengers has been trying to win fans over with things like the free War For Wakanda expansion that appears on Xbox Game Pass. However, the game has now added paid XP boosts and many fans feel angry and betrayed by this decision.
The XP boost comes in the form of consumables that you can now purchase on the market. As the developer Crystal Dynamics noted on their blog, “We’ve added a consumable category to the Marketplace where you can buy Hero Catalysts and Shard Extractors. You can buy a consumable with a one-day lifespan for 100 credits, a duration of three days for 250 credits or a duration of seven days for 500 credits.
Why do fans feel so betrayed? Simply put, publisher Square Enix promised this would not happen. A year ago, the official Marvel’s Avengers website said, “We’ve also made a commitment that the real-money content in Marvel’s Avengers will only be cosmetic additions, which will ensure we can keep the game fresh for years to come.”
For many players, this is an important dividing line. It’s one thing to allow players to spend money on things like new skins. Another thing is to offer shortcuts to level up, which some players consider a “pay to win” option. Coupled with last March’s annoying decision to slow down Marvel’s Avengers XP grind, it seems developers have been preparing to milk players with these XP boosts for most of the year.
While most fans are understandably upset about this change, some rationalize the fact that XP boosts are a common feature in many other major titles, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Others think this could be the first step in making Marvel’s Avengers a free-to-play game with supplies and other store items as a way to continue generating money from the game.
Regardless of the reasoning behind this decision, the timing couldn’t be worse. Some fans are now concerned about the overall quality of Eidos-Montréal’s upcoming Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy title which launches on October 26. And longtime Marvel’s Avengers fans may end up leaving the game forever before Spider-Man does his best – delayed appearance in the game later this year.
