“People move. Families are growing. Relationships end. ”This is an interesting way to start a press release: What is Netflix talking about? It is introducing a new feature, Profile Transfer, which allows you to move your profile to a new account.
This way you can transfer your Watch History, My List, Custom Recommendations, and even Saved Games (Netflix games are one thing, remember), various other settings will be transferred as well.
It sounds useful at first and it is, but the main reason behind launching this feature is that Netflix doesn’t really want you to use shared accounts. Leaving your parents’ house? You should create a separate account – here’s an easy way to transfer your profile.
Grumbling aside, this is actually useful in some cases, such as when you’re moving in with someone, one of you may be ditching their Netflix account and transferring their profile. This is a password sharing scenario that Netflix is fine with.
Profile transfer will be available to all subscribers soon, launch starts today and you will be notified when it reaches your account.
The streaming service is also launching an ad-supported tier in 12 countries – for USD 7, CAD 6 or GBP 5 per month you can watch 720p streams with 4-5 ad minutes per hour (each ad lasts 15-30 seconds ). It’s not as good as free, but this is the cheapest way to keep watching Netflix on your account. Alternatively, Netflix is trying to charge extra for shared accounts (this approach is being tested in several countries right now).
