Apex Legends is the latest great contender for the throne of Battle Royale. The game has a high pedigree: it comes from Respawn, the company that developed the Titanfall game series. It looks like Apex Legends will be far more successful than the Titanfall games put together, but that still leaves us with an important question.

Similarities and differences with Fortnite
If you’re familiar with Fortnite, you might assume Apex Legends is very similar. Fortnite was a division game when it came out. For many people, Fortnite represented the future of online shooters, and the game quickly dethroned PUBG as the best Battle Royale game on the block. And while other players didn’t necessarily get the hype, Fortnite’s sheer success meant we were set to get a lot of similar games over the next few years.

The truth is that while there are a lot of similarities between Fortnite and Apex Legends, there are also a lot of differences.
For example, both games involve landing on an island and fighting to be the last survivor by the end of the round. But while Fortnite allows people to play alone, Apex Legends forces players to form teams.
Fortnite is known to have added a dose of Minecraft and required players to search for supplies through destructible environments to build new structures. Apex Legends doesn’t let you build anything on the fly (which might be good news for old-school shooter fans overwhelmed by Fortnite’s constant multitasking).
Of course, each game has a cast of colorful characters that you can customize the look of. But while Fortnite characters generally play the same way, Apex lets you play as “Legends” who all have unique skills and abilities. Everyone plays differently and each character has an ultimate skill, a concept that should be very familiar to Overwatch fans.
